The Civil War united the nation and expanded America mainly through slavery. Since slavery was
a very partisan issue between the North and the South, ending the issue through the Civil War
made the United States more of a united whole. During the Civil War, there was a call for many
war materials. This led to a rise of factories and large companies to meet this demand, and after the
war, these companies turned the munition into civilian business, allowing for economic growth in
the United States. Also, there were lots of changes to the United States. The rise of large industrial
corporations made lots of consumer goods, and railroads became huge with companies created for
the sole purpose of building railroads. New legislation occurred as well, such as the Homestead Act
of 1862. Signed into law by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, this act would eventually result
in the transfer of 270 million acres of public lands to private individuals. The Civil War gave rise to
not only contributed to our fundamental goal of Manifest Destiny, but to the rise of Westward
Expansion. Westward Expansion was the main factor that made the United States a true continental
power. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the nation and opened up a little known region to
exploration and eventual settlement. The initial westward expansion brought increasing mobility

The United States was rapidly expanding and becoming more diverse, causing these men to look
past their own land. This idea was primarily favored by the Democratic Party because they believed
that contiguous land would voluntarily join the Union in order to obtain the benefits of Republican
rule. Democrats craved the benefits that Republicans had in the government and envied their
powerful positions. However, the Manifest Destiny gained Republican support over time ("Manifest

often believed that Americans were in the wrong, many people citizen that the Americans were

The Wilmot Proviso was a direct cause of the civil war, for it split the nation in half. Four years
after the Wilmot Proviso was denied of passage in the Senate, Southerner, John C Calhoun
delivered a speech to congress. Calhoun spoke to congress about the addition of California to the
US. Because of values of Manifest Destiny, it was in a way a dream of the US to add California.
However, according to Calhoun, it had be a slave state. He wanted this because he was a
southerner and the more slave states there were, the better. Also, as he says in source B, that if t
California was to be added as a free state, then the balance, or "equilibrium", would be thrown off
in the Union. There would be more free states than slave states. In order to keep the balance, he

When we think about power, what comes to mind is usually related to money and authority. We tend
to forget that the most powerful tool we have lies within our thoughts and beliefs about ourselves

Independence, a sense of pride and nationalism began developing in the minds of many Americans.
This became apparent when the concept of manifest destiny began circling the country in the 1840s.

They believed that America didn't need to conquer more land, and that they had enough on the east
coast. Although they were against it, they were unable to stop Manifest destiny, sense there were too

Transcontinental Railroad helped to progress it,by making transportation to the west an easier feat.

Manifest Destiny took place in the US in the mid–1800. Manifest Destiny was used among the
Americans in the 1840's as a defense for U.S. territorial expansion. It is the presumption that God had
destined the American people to at divine mission of American movement and conquest in the name
of Christianity and democracy.
In order to understand manifest destiny we must first find its' origin. John O'Sullivan first initiated
manifest destiny into America in 1845. This New York editor wrote the phrase that captured this

The Native Americans did fight back on some occasions however the Native Americans could not
withhold any longer and subsided to the Americans control. The expansionist forced many of the
Native Americans on reservations as they continued to move westward to dominate what the
expansionist thought was theirs to dominate.
While some were driven on what they believe was God's will others saw Manifest Destiny as the
historical inevitability domination of North America from sea to sea. Before, manifest destiny,
many Americans had small families not by choice, but for the mere fact that many of the people
would die before they would reach forty. By the mid 1800's technology began to rise, and the life
span for many Americans increased. The U.S. population grew from more than 5 million in 1800 to
more than 23 million by the mid century. By the increasing of families in town many of the towns
became overcrowded. At this point many Americans looked to the west for possible permanent
homes.
To others Americas manifest destiny was s looked west for economic gain. The land
westward–represented wealth, income, self–sufficiency, and freedom. No one really knew what laid
west to them, but many of these people were very adventurerous and took the journey west. By the

continents was justified and bound to happen. Although O'Sullivan did not intend for manifest
destiny to be a forceful expansion of territory, he believed it was an inevitable occurrence to come.
After the boom of O'Sullivan's manifest destiny article, he later went on to publish more of these

Monroe doctrine which was adopted in the year of 1823, was the closest America ever came to the
