Bunker oil is actually considered a waste product from refineries. When all the light hydrocarbons, which is used for jet fuels, gasoline and diesel etc. is distilled from the crude oil, the remaining parts are used as bunker oil for ships and asphalt. The bunker oil is extremely thick and has a high content of sulphur. The bunker oil is heated and put under high pressure before it can be combusted in the ship engine. Today bunker oil is com- busted at sea without any means of flue gas cleaning.
