1. Shaker Aamer Bay Live coverage
website for:
Free Shaker Aamer protest,
Wednesday 29th October2014
2. • Our event was a protest for the release of
the last UK resident left detained in
Guantanamo Bay.
3. • Protests for Shaker’s release are regular,
the one we attended happened
Wednesday 29th October.Judging pictures
from previous protests for Shaker’s
release, we were expecting a lively, well
attended peaceful protest.
• We planned to speak to a range of
different protesters and the organisers, as
well as capture opinion from passers by.
4. • As a team we agreed to each share the roles,
dabbling in leading interviews, recording
interviews, filming the protest and reaction from
pedestrians.
• The protest was of much smaller scale than we
had anticipated so we had to make do with ten
or so of the core Free Shaker Aamer
campaigners rather than collect coverage from a
range of different protesters. We all used our
phones to capture video and some of us audio.
5. • Using our phones we were able to utilise
digital tools such as Audioboo, Vine,
Instagram, and upload them to social
media platforms like Twitter
• Camilla and Sunniva photographed the
event with DSLRs.
6. • We were easily able to identify who to interview
as we had a very small selection of candidates,
the core ten or so Free Shaker Aamer
campaigners.
• We interviewed the protest organiser Ray silk,
and his wife Penny Leanne-Silk who were the
most helpful and informative.
• We had to utilize the narrow stretch of pavement
in front of Parliament square in our recordings as
well as the opposing parliament entrance.
7. • We chose to use Wordpress and utilise it’s
minimal layout options, allowing the content and
multimedia tools to entertain and inform the
viewer with visuals and audio.
• We used Twitter to link our multimedia tools to
social media, and featured embedded tweets as
well as Vine and instagram posts throughout our
Wordpress site. The main feed on the home
page of our wordpress site allowed us to post
chronologically as we created posts.
8. • Camilla created a section detailing Shaker Aamer’s
backstory.
• Josh created a Guantanamo Bay page detailing the
history of the detention centre, including a Storymap
highlighting the important facts. Also covered the event
using Vine and Instagram, speaking to organiser, Ray
Silk and his wife who were a wealth of information.
• Evelina produced a news in brief covering the protest.
• Sunniva produced an article about Lush cosmetics and
their involvement with Free Shaker Aamer.
9. • The event did not go as expected however we
worked efficiently to cover the event, capturing a
range of opinion and information that allowed us
to portray a clear and detailed observation of the
protest.
• The protesters eye catching orange boiler suits
and constant chanting made for excellent audio
and visual in video and photographs and
tUnfortunately being right next to the road,
constant streams of traffic made recording audio
difficult at times, and continual drizzly rain
distorted video recordings at times.
10. • To improve I would invest in a more up
todate smart phone, practise interviewing
skills and make use of equipment that can
capture higher quality audio footage.
