- The four instrument families of the orchestra are the Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion and String family.Why are they called families you might ask?Instruments in each family share like characteristics: how they make their sounds, how they are made, and what materials are used to make them.Just like you share similar characteristics to your brothers, sisters, mom and dad or grandparents. Maybe you have the same nose as your mom or you are the same ears as your dad.Design Principle: Simplicity—This slide shows that there are only four instrument families.Point of view–The column chart gives the viewer a chance to see that they are all different in colors but they are all at the same height.
- Long ago, all the instruments in this family were made out of wood, but now some our made out of wood or metal or a combination of materials.The wind refers to air that’s blown through the instruments to make sound by blowing across or into the tube.Except for the flute, these instruments use a thin piece of wood called a “reed” which VIBRATES when the player blows across it.Design Principle:Framing—There is a visual border that draws your attention to the key points of the slide.Legibility—The text size, color, and short sentences inside the text boxes allows for the viewer to see and read the detail.Emphasis—Key words on the slide stand out through the use of italicsOrganization—The layout for slide is the same for the viewer to understand after the description family, they will get a picture representation.Harmony—Text compliment each other with the use of the background.Balance--The parts of the visual are in an aesthetically pleasing arrangement.
- The flute is a common instrument in the wood wind family even thought it is made out of metal. - Brass instruments are made out of brass. They are long tubes with flared ends called “bells”. You play a brass instrument by putting your lips into a cup-shaped mouthpiece and buzz.Buzzing makes the air vibrate. - These are the basic brass instruments. They all have the three things in common. Mouthpiece, tubing, and a bell.The longer the tube the lower the sound. The shorter the tube the higher the sound.The trumpet makes the highest sound and the tuba makes the lowest sound. - The percussion instruments includes lots of instruments, from small to large and from simple to complicated.To play a percussion instrument, you hit it, shake it, or scrape it.Percussion instruments are used to keep the rhythm, create textrue, make special sounds, and even play different notes.Some are tuned and can sound different notes, like the xylophone or timpani, and some are untuned with no definite pitch, like a bas drum or castanets. - These are just a few percussion instruments you would find in a band or orchestra setting. There are many tuned and untuned instruments. - The String Family makes up more than half of the orchestra. Although many of the string instruments look similar, they are very different in size and sound. The string instruments get their name from having strings. - These are a few of the string instruments.The Violin is the smallest with the highest sound and the Bass is the largest with the lowest sound. The harp and guitar are also string instruments. The bass guitar, not pictured is also a string instrument.
