2. WHAT IS YOUR GENDER?
This bar chart displays the amount of people
taking the questionnaire. I handed out my music-
based questionnaire to the equal number of males
and females, because it would give me the
opportunity and prospect to understand gender
similarities and differences.
In addition, the results of this question in this
survey instantly helped me with my ideas in
relation to the production process and
development of my music video, as through seeing
the score/outcome of this question, being that
50% of each gender took this questionnaire, allows
me to compare both genders’ results to look into
in more detail their interests in music.
3. HOW OLD ARE YOU?
This bar chart displays the ages of the people that
participated in my music-based questionnaire. I asked 10
people, and the common age ranged between 11-16 and
17-22, which instantly helped me decide what the target
audience for my music video would be and around what age
it should be aimed at.
My questionnaire consisted of just I person aged between
5-10 who took this questionnaire, with 4 people aged 11-16
and 4 people aged 17-22 who took this music survey.
Lastly, only 1 person aged 23 or over, answered my
questionnaire. From the results and score of this question, it
was/is clear to me that my music video would be aimed at
teenagers and young adults, as it seemed that young
adolescents (youngsters) are most interested in the
construction and style of music videos. In addition, the age
range my music video will be aimed at is 14+, as it allows
me to promote my production (music video) to a wide
audience, since several teenagers tend to like watching
music videos and are attracted to music videos that are
specifically aimed at them.
4. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MUSIC GENRE?
This pie chart exhibits the various genres that people chose from a wide
range of music genres. I asked 10 people to fill out this question, and
the result/score displays that the most popular music genres of this
generation is Pop (40%) and R&B (30%). Furthermore, this immediately
provided me with an easy decision of what genre my music video would
be, and therefore, I certainly chose Pop as being the genre of my music
video, because it was the most favourite and preferred type of music
liked by teenagers that took my survey.
In addition, the results of this question greatly helped me further
develop my ideas and thoughts on what the concept of my music video
would be based on, enabling me to have a clear understanding and to
do thorough research of the conventions of my chosen genre (pop) in
music videos. Moreover, the results of this question helped me plan
ahead, as through this questionnaire, I knew from the beginning what
genre I would choose, which therefore helped me prepare for my music
video, in terms of the types of codes and conventions I would include
within my video, in order to conform to the stereotypical conventions of
the pop genre in music videos. Also, the reason why I want to make my
music video fit for purpose by conforming to the typical conventions
and features involved in pop genre music videos, is because I want the
viewer to feel prepared for what they are watching, giving them a sense
of ‘security’, since they are ‘expecting’ certain features to be included
within the video.
5. HOW OFTEN DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC IN A DAY?
This pie chart presents/evaluates how often the target
audience for my music video (which is 14+ teenagers)
listen to their favourite music genre in a day. In addition,
from the results of my question, it shows that most people
tend to listen to music around 2-3 times in a day. The
second most answered option was ‘4-6 times’, which again
gives the clear impression that overall youngsters have a
tendency to listen to music ‘a lot’ throughout the day, for
example, when travelling to and from school or other
places, when at home doing work, etc.
Also, very few people answered with ‘Once a day’ or ‘I
don’t listen to music’, as teenagers nowadays, especially in
this modern day and age of technology are given easy and
immediate access to listen to music, for example, music
apps such as, iTunes, Soundcloud, YouTube, and a lot
more. Therefore, when they are so many apps and ways of
listening to music, it is very unlikely for many people to say
that they ‘don’t listen to music’ or that they only listen to
music just ‘once a day’, which explains why only 2 people
individually chose these two options.
6. DO YOU WATCH MUSIC VIDEOS?
This pie chart shows the results of 10 people that
did this music questionnaire, on whether or not
they watch music videos. The results clearly display
that they are a lot more people that ‘watch’ music
videos than people that ‘do not watch’ music
videos, with 70% who answered ‘Yes’ and 30% who
answered ‘No’.
In addition, the high score of the amount of people
that ‘do’ watch music videos is highly beneficial for
the research of my product, as I now know that
several teenagers do watch music videos and are
likely to go on music based apps like YouTube, to
watch them. Moreover, this also allows me to view
popular music videos, to gain ideas from them by
analysing and examining them, to see what types of
conventions and features of music videos mostly
attract teenagers, so that I can incorporate them
into my music video, which therefore is attention-
grabbing to the youth.
7. WHAT ENCOURAGES YOU TO WATCH MUSIC VIDEOS?
This pie chart shows the results of 10 people that took this music survey, and from the
scores displayed, it is clearly evident that most people watch music videos mainly
because of the artist. This is because, teenagers tend to have a ‘favourite singer(s)’, and
therefore would watch music videos of that artist regardless of whether or not the song
is good or bad, because they are ‘fans’. Furthermore, this therefore allows me to apply
this knowledge of ‘Dyer’s Star theory’ to my/our music video, as it is eye-catching for the
audience/viewer.
In addition, the second most encouraging factor/feature was ‘word of mouth’, and this is
because, many teenagers stated that they watch music videos when they hear about it
from their peers or family, and therefore are greatly persuaded and encouraged to watch
music videos. For example, a person may not necessarily like an artist, but however may
be convinced by a friend or family member to watch a music video, regardless of
whether or not they are a ‘fan’ of that artist.
Moreover, the results also show that teenagers are encouraged to watch music videos
because of ‘advertisements’ and ‘other factors’. To me specific, advertisements published
online on websites and music apps are a way of promoting one’s/their music, which tend
to give the viewer a ‘snippet’ of the song, saying that they should ‘buy their album’.
Likewise, if a person likes the sound of the music presented in the advertisement and are
interested in listening to the full song, then they would listen to the full song online
through it’s music video, and that way the song would be noticed by the public gradually
or even instantly, since it is available to easily access online.
Lastly, the ‘other’ option on the pie chart, suggests ways apart from the ‘artist’ or
‘advertisements’, etc. encouraging one to watch music videos, such as, social networking
sites. Almost every teenager has at least one social networking account/app that they
use, for example: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat’, etc. and through using these
apps, news and information is spread around promptly, making the public aware of
things. Celebrities have social networking accounts, and tend to promote their music on
it by telling people about their “new music” and “new music videos” that they should
watch, and therefore, encourage the public to watch their music videos, through the use
of social networking sites, as people all around the world can access it.
8. HOW OFTEN DO YOU WATCH MUSIC VIDEOS IN A DAY?
This bar chart displays the results of 10 people who answered my music
survey, showing that most teenagers tend to watch music videos
around 2-3 times a day for pleasure and entertainment. Therefore this
suggests and demonstrates that the internet (Web 2.0) is increasing
over time and becoming highly popular through the use of digital
technology and social networking sites, as the internet spreads
information in an instant and directly delivers to the public online.
Moreover, the second most answered option was ‘4-6 times’, and yet
again shows the clear reason as to why teenagers see music videos a lot
in a day, and this would be because teenagers tend to use their mobile
phones throughout the day a lot, which therefore means that they
would come across entertainment based news about new and recent
music videos, since they are constantly using social networking sites
and would evidently get easy access to new music.
Furthermore, other ways of watching music videos would be on
television. However, it seems that in this modern day and age,
teenagers barely watch music on TV channels such as, MTV music, 4
Music, Capital FM TV, etc. but instead watch music videos online,
through their social accounts. Additionally, this questionnaire has
helped me develop my ideas on how I could promote my production
(Music video), and I have decided that I will obviously promote it on
micro-blogs like Twitter to gain teenager’s interests, because twitter
receive any type of news in seconds, and this would help promote my
music video to the public.
9. DO YOU BUY MUSIC ALBUMS?
The results for this question demonstrates that an
equal amount of people buy music albums, and the
other half don’t. The reason for the score being
equal, is because, teenagers and people in general
tend to buy music albums online as well as buying
physical hard copies of albums, as everything
nowadays is on web 2.0. For example, purchasing
music albums on iTunes has become so popular
and constantly used by people worldwide.
Moreover, these results help me consider the
significant importance of both my Digi-pack and
the online promotion of my production (music
video) on social networking sites, as it seems that
my target audience buy hard-copies of albums and
also purchase music online. Therefore, I will
promote my music video online on social media,
and will also include a Digi-pack for my album that
contains the main song used in my music video.
10. HOW OFTEN DO YOU BUY ALBUMS IN A
MONTH?
The results of this bar chart show that most
teenagers tend to buy music albums very
seldom, around only once a month,
because they find all the music that they
need on the internet or on iTunes.
However, the second most answered
option was ‘2-3 times’, which suggests that
some people buy music albums more
often then others. However, since I have a
Digi-pack for my music, me, along with my
group partner will need to ensure that we
highly attract a wide range of audience to
buy our album, as my/our aim is to
promote my Digi-pack to our target
audience.
11. HOW MUCH WILL YOU PAY FOR AN ALBUM?
This pie chart shows that most people
would be willing to pay around £7.99-£8.99
for a music album. However, from previous
questions, it had seemed that an equal
amount of people buy music albums and
the other half don’t. Therefore, since some
people do not buy music albums, as they
can access it online instead, they would only
be willing to spend between £3.99 to £4.99
on an album.
Consequently, me and my group partner
will need to consider keeping the album at a
reasonable price, as this will attract a range
of audience, along with making it appealing
to them through the use of an effective,
engaging and vibrant Digi-pack cover.
12. WHAT ATTRACTS YOU TO BUY A MUSIC
ALBUM?
This pie chart shows that most people buy
music albums because of the artist and the
featured songs in it. Therefore, this greatly helps
me develop ideas as to how I should design my
digipack, as I now know that the appearance of
the front cover of my digipack will consist of the
main artists of my band, and this because, as a
result it seems that that artist is what attracts
people to buy an album the most, and therefore
I aim to encourage my target audience to buy
my album, and the way to do that, would be to
have an engaging and vibrant front cover
appearance, with the featured songs included in
the album written on the back cover.
Furthermore, adding these features and designs
to my Digi-pack should highly encourage my
target audience to buy the album.
13. WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC VIDEOS DO YOU
PREFER WATCHING?
This bar chart shows the results of 10 people
who filled out this questionnaire. It is clearly
evident that Narrative is most appreciated style
of music video concepts. Therefore, this greatly
helped me and my group partner develop
ideas on the what the concept/context of our
music video would be, and therefore, we
decided to incorporate a ‘mixture’ of these
styles into our music video.
Moreover, to be specific, we decided to have
‘Narrative’ as the main style of our video, along
with a bit of ‘cameo’ and ‘performance’.
Therefore, having a mixture of three types of
styles combined and merged together into one
music video would make it engaging and
appealing for my my/our target audience.
