The document discusses the technologies used at various stages of a music video project. 1. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Technologies used In order to complete my project I utilised hardware such as camera equipment (camera, tape, still camera, tripod etc), accessories (charger, firewire cable etc) and PC (cpu, moniter,mouse and keyboard) I also used more basic technologies in order to create the required effects for the music video such as red smoke pellets, black blood (homemade from golden syrup, flour, water and food colouring) and also some basic strobe type lighting for the darker scenes.

3. software Windows XP was the OS for the PC used for editing at school and Windows Vista was the OS used for the editing PC at home. I used Adobe Premiere Pro to edit at first, it was supplied by the school but then when problems were encountered I saved the video as an AVI and imported it into Sony Vegas so I could finish editing the video at home. I used Adobe photoshop CS5 in order to create the Digipak and Advert for the Ancillary project. I enjoyed using this as I am quite familiar with the program. I also used software such as Internet explorer and Firefox to do any internet related work and Microsoft office word and powerpoint to do research and planning work and the evaluation.

4. Editing effects Within Adobe Premiere Pro I felt I knew it quite well as we had used an earlier version of the programme for the practice music video. I used effects such as speeding up and slowing down clips in order make the action more dynamic and also reversing playback of clips in ordet to create an interesting effect such as the shot where the snow is falling upwards.

I used effects like colourize on Premiere Pro and then refined the colours on sonyvegas with the brightness and contrast tools and colour editing tools to make the performers hair a stand out as a vibrant red and I also used the brightness and contrast tools on Premiere Pro to give the washed out colour effects within the library scenes.

6. I also used the noise effect on Adobe Premiere Pro to create the television noise shots within the music video.

Problems encountered All of the programs were reliable and efficient however there were some problems encountered relating to the school’s network system, which regularly deleted the class’ footage and work. This was overcome by creating a new drive for us to store our work however sometimes it was still quite unreliable. Also the Adobe Premiere Pro program used at school was quite unreliable as the computers could not facilitate the software so the program regularly crashed mid-editing/uploading. This was resolved by saving my video as an .avi and migrating all the footage and the video .avi over to my home computer to continue editing on Sony Vegas although this took a few days to complete the migration process.

8. Websites I have made use of Google.com – I used this in order to search for various things related to research and planning such as images that I could use as references for how I wanted to create my video. I also used it to search for various examples of students blogs in order to get a better perspective on how my peers have tackled the project. Facebook.com – I used facebook in order to communicate with people involved with filming such as people helping me out with filming or transport and also performers. I also used the facebook message service to send messages to Sammy, discussing what costume to used for the wood scenes, seen as she was going to supply her own costumes. I sent her images of examples of what I had in mind and she worked with what she had.

9. Wikipedia.com – I used wikipedia as a source to find out information on Crystal Castles and the bands I used for video analysis as I although it can be edited by anyone, I think it is a relatively reliable source and it is easy to find the information you need. Tumblr.com – I have used tumblr as the blogging website to upload my project work onto as I already have a blog on there and so feel quite familiar with tools such as posting, editing, deleting etc but also more complicated things like html blog personalisation Youtube.com – I used youtube in finding videos to use for video analysis and also to find references and inspiration for the production work. I also uploaded my rough cut and final cut to youtube and used the embed code to put the videos onto my blog. Slideshare.com – I used slideshare to upload word documents and presentations of work related to research and planning such as powerpoints for location and costume planning and a word document for production schedule and also to upload my evaluation work as I have been using powerpoint. I used the embed code to put them onto my blog and I think this was the easiest option for putting my work onto my blog.

10. I think it would have been cool to have had an opportunity to use more recent technologies such as HD camera hardware and more up to date storage for the footage such as internal camera memory or SD card or something similar as opposed to using a DV tape. I also think it would have been interesting to use professional lighting equipment and editing software such as final cut pro etc.
