INTRODUCTION:
• THE PROJECT MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE (PMI) DEFINES A PROJECT AS A
TEMPORARY ENDEAVOUR UNDERTAKEN TO CREATE A UNIQUE PRODUCT,
SERVICE, OR RESULT. THE TEMPORARY NATURE OF PROJECTS INDICATES A
DEFINITE BEGINNING AND END. THE END IS REACHED WHEN THE PROJECT’S
OBJECTIVES HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED OR WHEN THE PROJECT IS TERMINATED
BECAUSE ITS OBJECTIVES WILL NOT OR CANNOT BE MET, OR WHEN THE NEED
FOR THE PROJECT NO LONGER EXISTS.

THE PROJECT GOALS WITHIN THE GIVEN CONSTRAINTS. THIS INFORMATION IS
USUALLY DESCRIBED IN PROJECT DOCUMENTATION, CREATED AT THE
BEGINNING OF THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS.

INITIATION PHASE :
IT IS THE FIRST PHASE IN A PROJECT MANAGEMENT AS IT INVOLVES
STARTING UP A NEW PROJECT. INITIATION PHASE INCLUDES THE DECIDING POINT
FOR THE STAKEHOLDERS WHETHER OR NOT COMMIT TO A PROJECT.
PLANNING AND DESIGN :
ONCE THE PROJECT RECEIVES THE GREEN LIGHT, IT
NEEDS A SOLID PLAN TO GUIDE THE TEAM, AS WELLAS KEEP THEM ON TIME AND
ON BUDGET. A WELL-WRITTEN PROJECT PLAN GIVES GUIDANCE FOR OBTAINING
RESOURCES, ACQUIRING FINANCING AND PROCURING REQUIRED MATERIALS.
SCHEDULING:
SCHEDULING IS THE MECHANICAL PROCESS OF FORMALIZING THE
PLANNED FUNCTIONS, ASSIGNING THE START AND COMPLETION DATES TO EACH
PART OF THE WORK IN SUCH A MANNER THAT THE WHOLE WORK PROCEEDS IN A
LOGICAL SEQUENCE AND IN AN ORDERLY AND SYSTEMATIC MANNER.
IMPLEMENTATION PHASE (OR) EXECUTION :
THIS IS ALSO A CRUCIAL STAGE AS THE PROJECT TAKES SHAPE
DURING THE IMPLEMENTATION PHASE. IT INVOLVES THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE
ACTUAL RESULT OF THE PROJECT. THE PROGRAMMERS ARE WORKING ON
ENCODING, DESIGNERS ARE BUSY WITH GRAPHIC MATERIAL, CONTRACTORS ARE
BUILDING AND SO ON.
PROJECT PERFORMANCE (OR) MONITORING AND CONTROL :
IN THIS PHASE, AS THE SCHEDULED WORK IS GOING IN PROGRESS, THE
PROJECT MANAGERS WILL COMPARE PROJECT STATUS AND PROGRESS TO THE
ACTUAL PLAN. TO KEEP THE PROJECT ON TRACK, THE MANAGERS NEED TO ADJUST
THE SCHEDULES. SO, BASICALLY, IT INVOLVES MONITORING THE PROJECT FOR
RISKS AND KEEPING DISTANCE WITH THOSE RISKS.
CLOSING PHASE :
FOLLOW-UP PHASE OR THE CLOSURE PHASE REPRESENTS THE
COMPLETED PROJECT. THE CONTRACTORS ARE TERMINATED AT THIS TIME
THOSE WHO ARE HIRED TO WORK SPECIFICALLY ON THE PROJECT. MANAGERS
THANK THOSE WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE PROJECT FOR THEIR EFFORTS AND
VALUABLE MEMBERS ARE RECOGNIZED. AFTER THE COMPLETION OF A PROJECT,
A PROJECT MANAGER WILL OFTEN HOLD A MEETING TO IDENTIFY PROJECT
FAILURES AND WHAT WERE THE POSITIVE POINTS IN A PROJECT.

CONSTRUCTION.
• CALCULATE THE PRACTICAL DURATIONS REQUIRED TO CARRY OUT THE
ACTIVITIES.
• DEVELOP SCHEDULING USING PROJECT PLANNER SOFTWARE PRIMAVERA.
COMMON TECHNIQUES USED INPROJECT SCHEDULING :
1. GANTT CHART:
GANTT CHARTS ARE ALSO KNOWN AS BAR CHARTS. ACTIVITIES
ARE REPRESENTED AS BARS AND THE LENGTH OF EACH BAR REPRESENTS THE
ACTIVITY DURATION. THE BEGINNING OF THE BAR SHOWS THE START DATE AND
THE END OF THE BAR SHOWS THE END DATE OF THE ACTIVITY. DEPENDING ON THE
PROJECT EXECUTION PLAN AND RESOURCE AVAILABILITY, THESE BARS MAY BE
SEQUENTIAL, OR RUN IN PARALLEL.
ADVANTAGE OF BAR CHART:
• BAR CHART ARE SIMPLE TO PREPARE
• BAR CHART ARE EASY TO UNDERSTAND
• BAR CHART ARE ACCEPTABLE FOR PRESENTATION, ESPECIALLY FOR FIELD
PEOPLE AND PEOPLE WHO ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH THE CPM
• BAR CHARTS CAN BE LOADED WITH MORE INFORMATION, SUCH AS CASH-FLOW
DIAGRAMS AND MAN-HOURS.
LIMITATION OF BAR CHART:
• THE MAIN LIMITATION OF BAR CHART IS LACK OF LOGICAL REPRESENTATION.
BAR CHARTS DO NOT REVEAL THE ANSWERS OF RELATIONSHIP.
• THE BAR CHART DOES NOT SHOWS THE CRITICAL ACTIVITIES INVOLVED IN THE
PROJECT. THE CRITICAL ACTIVITIES ARE IMPORTANT DURING THE RESCHEDULE
OF THE PROJECT IF ANY PROBLEM COME THROUGH.
• THE BAR CHART CAN NOT USED AS AN EFFECTIVE CONTROL DEVICE BECAUSE IT
DOES NOT SHOWS THE PROGRESS OF THE WORK.
2.CRITICAL PATH METHOD:
• THE CRITICAL PATH METHOD IS AN ADVANCED SCHEDULING METHOD WHICH
WAS DEVELOPED IN THE LATE 1950S. THEN IT HAS BEEN USED FOR THE
SCHEDULING OF ANY TYPE OF PROJECTS INCLUDING CONSTRUCTION,
AEROSPACE AND DEFENSE, SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT, IT, ETC.
• THE CRITICAL PATH IS THE LONGEST PATH OF THE NETWORK DIAGRAM. IN THIS
METHOD, ACTIVITIES ARE LISTED, ACTIVITY DURATIONS ARE DETERMINED,
DEPENDENCIES BETWEEN THE ACTIVITIES ARE ESTABLISHED AND THE LONGEST
PATH IS IDENTIFIED BY MAKING FORWARD AND BACKWARD CALCULATIONS.
• IT IS A COMMON METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE COMPLETION DATE OF A
PROJECT
ADVANTAGES OF CPM:
• IT MAKES CONTROL EASIER FOR THE MANAGEMENT.
• IT IDENTIFIES THE MOST CRITICAL ELEMENTS IN THE PROJECT. THUS, THE
MANAGEMENT IS KEPT ALERT AND PREPARED TO PAY DUE ATTENTION TO THE
CRITICAL ACTIVITIES OF THE PROJECT.
• IT MAKES BETTER AND DETAILED PLANNING POSSIBLE.
LIMITATION OF CPM:
• CPM OPERATES ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT THERE IS A PRECISE KNOWN TIME
THAT EACH ACTIVITY IN THE PROJECT WILL TAKE. BUT, IT MAY NOT BE TRUE IN
REAL PRACTICE.
• CPM TIME ESTIMATES ARE NOT BASED ON STATISTICALANALYSIS.
3.PERT (PROGRAM EVALUATION REVIEW TECHNIQUE):
• PERT IS SIMILAR TO CPM BUT USED WHEN TIME ESTIMATES OF THE ACTIVITIES
ARE UNCERTAIN, IT IS NOT HIGHLY USED FOR CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS.
• THE THREE ESTIMATE TECHNIQUES ARE;
• MOST LIKELY ESTIMATE
• OPTIMISTIC ESTIMATE
• PESSIMISTIC ESTIMATE
• EXPECTED TIME OF THE TASK IS CALCULATED BY USING THESE THREE
ESTIMATES.
ADVANTAGES OF PERT:
• IT COMPELS MANAGERS TO PLAN THEIR PROJECTS CRITICALLY AND ANALYSE
ALL FACTORS AFFECTING THE PROGRESS OF THE PLAN. THE PROCESS OF THE
NETWORK ANALYSIS REQUIRES THAT THE PROJECT PLANNING BE CONDUCTED
ON CONSIDERABLE DETAIL FROM THE START TO THE FINISH.
• THE PERT TIME (TE) IS BASED UPON 3-WAY ESTIMATE AND HENCE IS THE MOST
OBJECTIVE TIME IN THE LIGHT OF UNCERTAINTIES AND RESULTS IN GREATER
DEGREE OF ACCURACY IN TIME FORECASTING.
DISADVANTAGES OF PERT:
• THE COSTS MAY BE HIGHER THAN THE CONVENTIONAL METHODS OF
PLANNING AND CONTROL.
• IT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR RELATIVELY SIMPLE AND REPETITIVE PROCESSES

PROJECT.
• DETERMINE THE TOTAL DURATION REQUIRED FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE
DIFFERENT PHASES INVOLVED.
• KEEP A TRACK OF THE SCHEDULED AND THE ON-SITE CONSTRUCTION.
• ASSIGN THE RESOURCES IN A MANNER THAT EXPENSES AND TIME DURATION AND

  • 3. INTRODUCTION: • THE PROJECT MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE (PMI) DEFINES A PROJECT AS A TEMPORARY ENDEAVOUR UNDERTAKEN TO CREATE A UNIQUE PRODUCT, SERVICE, OR RESULT. THE TEMPORARY NATURE OF PROJECTS INDICATES A DEFINITE BEGINNING AND END. THE END IS REACHED WHEN THE PROJECT’S OBJECTIVES HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED OR WHEN THE PROJECT IS TERMINATED BECAUSE ITS OBJECTIVES WILL NOT OR CANNOT BE MET, OR WHEN THE NEED FOR THE PROJECT NO LONGER EXISTS. WHAT IS A PROJECT…?

WHAT IS PROJECT MANAGEMENT..? • PROJECT MANAGEMENT IS THE PRACTICE OF INITIATING, PLANNING, EXECUTING, CONTROLLING, AND CLOSING THE WORK OF A TEAM TO ACHIEVE SPECIFIC GOALS AND MEET SPECIFIC SUCCESS CRITERIAAT THE SPECIFIED TIME. • THE PRIMARY CHALLENGE OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT IS TO ACHIEVE ALL OF THE PROJECT GOALS WITHIN THE GIVEN CONSTRAINTS. THIS INFORMATION IS USUALLY DESCRIBED IN PROJECT DOCUMENTATION, CREATED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS.
  • 5. THE PROCESS OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT CONSISTS OF  INITIATION  PLANNING  SCHEDULING  EXECUTION  MONITORING AND CONTROLLING  CLOSING
  • 6. INITIATION PHASE : IT IS THE FIRST PHASE IN A PROJECT MANAGEMENT AS IT INVOLVES STARTING UP A NEW PROJECT. INITIATION PHASE INCLUDES THE DECIDING POINT FOR THE STAKEHOLDERS WHETHER OR NOT COMMIT TO A PROJECT. PLANNING AND DESIGN : ONCE THE PROJECT RECEIVES THE GREEN LIGHT, IT NEEDS A SOLID PLAN TO GUIDE THE TEAM, AS WELLAS KEEP THEM ON TIME AND ON BUDGET. A WELL-WRITTEN PROJECT PLAN GIVES GUIDANCE FOR OBTAINING RESOURCES, ACQUIRING FINANCING AND PROCURING REQUIRED MATERIALS.

SCHEDULING: SCHEDULING IS THE MECHANICAL PROCESS OF FORMALIZING THE PLANNED FUNCTIONS, ASSIGNING THE START AND COMPLETION DATES TO EACH PART OF THE WORK IN SUCH A MANNER THAT THE WHOLE WORK PROCEEDS IN A LOGICAL SEQUENCE AND IN AN ORDERLY AND SYSTEMATIC MANNER. IMPLEMENTATION PHASE (OR) EXECUTION : THIS IS ALSO A CRUCIAL STAGE AS THE PROJECT TAKES SHAPE DURING THE IMPLEMENTATION PHASE. IT INVOLVES THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ACTUAL RESULT OF THE PROJECT. THE PROGRAMMERS ARE WORKING ON ENCODING, DESIGNERS ARE BUSY WITH GRAPHIC MATERIAL, CONTRACTORS ARE BUILDING AND SO ON.
  • 8. PROJECT PERFORMANCE (OR) MONITORING AND CONTROL : IN THIS PHASE, AS THE SCHEDULED WORK IS GOING IN PROGRESS, THE PROJECT MANAGERS WILL COMPARE PROJECT STATUS AND PROGRESS TO THE ACTUAL PLAN. TO KEEP THE PROJECT ON TRACK, THE MANAGERS NEED TO ADJUST THE SCHEDULES. SO, BASICALLY, IT INVOLVES MONITORING THE PROJECT FOR RISKS AND KEEPING DISTANCE WITH THOSE RISKS.
  • 9. CLOSING PHASE : FOLLOW-UP PHASE OR THE CLOSURE PHASE REPRESENTS THE COMPLETED PROJECT. THE CONTRACTORS ARE TERMINATED AT THIS TIME THOSE WHO ARE HIRED TO WORK SPECIFICALLY ON THE PROJECT. MANAGERS THANK THOSE WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE PROJECT FOR THEIR EFFORTS AND VALUABLE MEMBERS ARE RECOGNIZED. AFTER THE COMPLETION OF A PROJECT, A PROJECT MANAGER WILL OFTEN HOLD A MEETING TO IDENTIFY PROJECT FAILURES AND WHAT WERE THE POSITIVE POINTS IN A PROJECT.
  • 10. OBJECTIVES: THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS STUDY ARE: • FIND THE CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE FOR A RESIDENTIAL BUILDING CONSTRUCTION. • CALCULATE THE PRACTICAL DURATIONS REQUIRED TO CARRY OUT THE ACTIVITIES. • DEVELOP SCHEDULING USING PROJECT PLANNER SOFTWARE PRIMAVERA.
  • 11. COMMON TECHNIQUES USED INPROJECT SCHEDULING : 1. GANTT CHART: GANTT CHARTS ARE ALSO KNOWN AS BAR CHARTS. ACTIVITIES ARE REPRESENTED AS BARS AND THE LENGTH OF EACH BAR REPRESENTS THE ACTIVITY DURATION. THE BEGINNING OF THE BAR SHOWS THE START DATE AND THE END OF THE BAR SHOWS THE END DATE OF THE ACTIVITY. DEPENDING ON THE PROJECT EXECUTION PLAN AND RESOURCE AVAILABILITY, THESE BARS MAY BE SEQUENTIAL, OR RUN IN PARALLEL.

ADVANTAGE OF BAR CHART: • BAR CHART ARE SIMPLE TO PREPARE • BAR CHART ARE EASY TO UNDERSTAND • BAR CHART ARE ACCEPTABLE FOR PRESENTATION, ESPECIALLY FOR FIELD PEOPLE AND PEOPLE WHO ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH THE CPM • BAR CHARTS CAN BE LOADED WITH MORE INFORMATION, SUCH AS CASH-FLOW DIAGRAMS AND MAN-HOURS.
  • 14. LIMITATION OF BAR CHART: • THE MAIN LIMITATION OF BAR CHART IS LACK OF LOGICAL REPRESENTATION. BAR CHARTS DO NOT REVEAL THE ANSWERS OF RELATIONSHIP. • THE BAR CHART DOES NOT SHOWS THE CRITICAL ACTIVITIES INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT. THE CRITICAL ACTIVITIES ARE IMPORTANT DURING THE RESCHEDULE OF THE PROJECT IF ANY PROBLEM COME THROUGH. • THE BAR CHART CAN NOT USED AS AN EFFECTIVE CONTROL DEVICE BECAUSE IT DOES NOT SHOWS THE PROGRESS OF THE WORK.
  • 15. 2.CRITICAL PATH METHOD: • THE CRITICAL PATH METHOD IS AN ADVANCED SCHEDULING METHOD WHICH WAS DEVELOPED IN THE LATE 1950S. THEN IT HAS BEEN USED FOR THE SCHEDULING OF ANY TYPE OF PROJECTS INCLUDING CONSTRUCTION, AEROSPACE AND DEFENSE, SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT, IT, ETC. • THE CRITICAL PATH IS THE LONGEST PATH OF THE NETWORK DIAGRAM.
