AGENDA
Plagiarism is
not a simple,
“black and
white” issue.
Identify and
treat the causes of the
disease as well as
diagnose and cure its
symptoms.
To use another person’s or persons’
words, ideas, invention, etc.,
without appropriate reference,
and claim it as your own work.

How Do Students Plagiarize?
• Copy verbatim from a
printed source(s)
• Copy and paste from
online source(s)
• Paraphrasing:
– Re-order words without
reference
– Paraphrase badly
• Idea plagiarism
• Translated plagiarism
• Purchase an essay from
another student
• Purchase a paper from
an online “essay mill”
Pre-written
Custom-written
• Copy a friend’s essay
Why Do Students Plagiarize?
• Time Management:
– Workload and deadlines.
• Grade Pressure:
– Parental expectations.
• Ease/laziness:
– Internet
– No significant deterrent.
• Insufficient Knowledge:
– of what plagiarism is …
– of how to paraphrase …
– of proper referencing.
• Lack of Enthusiasm:
for the course/subject
matter
for the instructor.
• Personal Attitude:
“Everyone does it…”
Plagiarism not see as
unreasonable
behaviour.
Results from Bilkent Survey
1. Which of the following would you describe as plagiarism?
Common Reasons for Plagiarism
It’s okay if
I don’t get caught!
I was too busy to
write that paper!
(Job, big game, too much homework!)
My teachers
expect
too much!
I’ve got to get
into
??? U.!
My parents
expect “A”s!
This assignment
was BORING!
Everyone does it!
Poor
Communication
skills

Types of Plagiarism
• Intentional
– Copying a friend’s work
– Buying or borrowing papers
– Cutting and pasting blocks of text from electronic
sources without documenting
– Media “borrowing "without documentation
– Web publishing without permissions of creators
• Unintentional
– Careless paraphrasing
– Poor documentation
– Quoting excessively
– Failure to use your own “voice
Avoiding Plagiarism: Quoting
Quotations are the exact words of an author, copied
directly from a source, word for word. Quotations must
be cited!
Use quotations when:
• You want to add the power of an author’s words to support
your argument
• You want to disagree with an author’s argument
• You want to highlight particularly eloquent or powerful
phrases or passages
• You are comparing and contrasting specific points of view
• You want to note the important research that precedes
your own
Avoiding Plagiarism: Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing means rephrasing the words of an author,
putting his/her thoughts in your own words.
When you paraphrase, you rework the source’s ideas,
words, phrases, and sentence structures with your own.
Like quotations, paraphrased material must be followed
with in-text documentation and cited on your Works-Cited
page.
Paraphrase when:
• You plan to use information on your note cards and wish to
avoid plagiarizing
• You want to avoid overusing quotations
• You want to use your own voice to present information
Avoiding Plagiarism: Summarizing
• Summarizing involves putting the main idea(s) of
one or several writers into your own words,
including only the main point(s).
• Summaries are significantly shorter than the
original and take a broad overview of the source
material. Again, it is necessary to attribute
summarized ideas to their original sources.
Summarize when:
• You want to establish background or offer an overview of a topic
• You want to describe knowledge (from several sources) about a
topic
• You want to determine the main ideas of a single source

 Setting up a Class
 Creating a Student List
 Submitting a Paper
 Viewing a Report
How to Use Turnitin?
Ways of Submitting a Paper
1- Create an Assignment and upload
a paper to that Assignment,
2- Without creating an Assignment,
you can submit an individual paper
to a Class,
3- Students can upload their papers
using enrollment ID & password.
Benefits of Turnitin
Deters plagiarism before it happens.
Saves time in the investigation of the originality of
student work.
Allows for efficient citation verification.
Provides documentation of any alleged plagiarism.
Provides resources to assist in teaching research
and writing skills, including proper citation.
