Creating spaces using Environmental Acoustics™
design and research means employees can get
work done in the office without distraction. It
means the student in the very last row can hear

Environmental Acoustics™ design means feeling better,
working better and healing better in any setting.
Our physical surroundings in any given setting contribute to a space’s acoustics. The environment can be made
pleasant with wanted sounds, or it can be polluted by unnecessary and unpleasant noise. With proper Environmental
Acoustics™ design, sounds can be controlled to ensure a space suits the way it is commonly used – whether that is
concentration, collaboration or rest.
The CAC is a measure
of how well a ceiling
panel blocks sound
transmission when
traveling from one room
into a ceiling plenum with
no wall above and down
into another room with
the same type of ceiling
(measured according to
ASTM E1414).
Noise reduction occurs
when materials and
objects convert sound into
heat energy. Reflected
sound always loses
some energy, but the
amount greatly depends
on the material of that
surface. This is measured
as the Noise Reduction
Coefficient (NRC). An
NRC of 0 indicates
perfect reflection; an
NRC of 1 indicates perfect
absorption (measured
according to ASTM
C423-08).
This is a measure for
rating the speech privacy
performance of a ceiling
system in an open plan
environment where
the space is divided by
half-height, cubicle-style
walls. AC measures how
much sound is reflected
off the ceiling between
the two divided, adjacent
spaces.
<150 = Poor Performance
>200 = High Performance
(Measured according to
ASTM E1110.)
Noise Reduction
Coefficient (NRC)
Articulation
Class (AC)
Ceiling Attenuation
Class (CAC)
The graphics below explain the key factors that affect Environmental Acoustics™
design and how they are measured. The right blend of ceiling products can ensure
these acoustical properties best accommodate a space’s intended usage.
Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC), Ceiling Attenuation Class (CAC) and Articulation Class (AC)
are measured according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards.
ENVIRONMENTALACOUSTICS™DESIGN
Sound Reflection
The reflection of sound can enhance
the quality and volume of speech and
music, as well as noise.
Other factors that affect
a room’s acoustics:
Reverberation Time
After sound is ended at the source, it
continues to reflect off surfaces until
it is completely absorbed. This effect,
termed reverberation, influences
speech intelligibility, enjoyment of
music and noisiness of a room.

What is a Decibel?
Environmental Acoustics™ design is based on
understanding the properties of sound.
Sound is a three-dimensional force. Much like expanding bubbles, sound waves
cause atmospheric changes, moving up, out and down equally and simultaneously
to cause changes in atmospheric pressure. These changes in pressure, or sound
pressure, and the intensity of that sound pressure, are what determine the intensity
level or loudness of a sound.
The sensation of hearing, produced by vibrating the eardrum, is due to these small
pressure changes. The sounds produced from these atmospheric changes in
pressure are measured in decibels. The lowest sound pressure that can be heard
by humans is called the hearing threshold (0 dB). The highest that can be endured
is known as the pain threshold (120 dB). Sound pressure at the pain threshold is a
million times greater than that at the hearing threshold.
To understand how sound affects everyday life, it’s important to know where
common sounds fall in the decibel range between the hearing threshold and the
pain threshold:
– Normal office noise: 65 decibels
– Lawn mower: 95 decibels
– Crying baby: 110 decibels
The science of environmental acoustics studies the characteristics and
performance of materials, products, systems and services related to sound
and the effects of sound on the surrounding environment. Choosing materials
or construction techniques that control, diminish or stop sound waves is the
cornerstone of Environmental Acoustics™ design.

Environmental Acoustics™ design means this doctor will
hear every word of his patient’s concerns.
As the world gets louder, so do our healthcare facilities. Bigger buildings, more
people, more noisy machinery, more demands. The sound level keeps increasing –
greatly affecting medical and economical outcomes. In fact, research has shown
that high sound levels cause stress among hospital staff and patients, which in turn
increases staff turnover, increases the rate of medical errors and negatively affects
how patients respond to treatment.
CertainTeed Ceilings specializes in crafting acoustically sound environments within
the healthcare setting. With Environmental Acoustics™ design we can help you create
spaces where patients rest and heal while enabling practitioners to work better. That
will enhance any patient’s experience, increasing positive outcomes.

With a commitment to Building Responsibly,™
sustainability is part of everything we do.
As a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), CertainTeed Ceilings
is a leader in the effort to provide solutions that promote sustainable design.
We incorporate sustainability at every step – from the product’s raw material
content to how it’s handled through manufacturing and shipping, as well as
throughout the product life cycle. That results in products that incorporate
one of the highest concentrations of recycled content in the industry, plants
that continually strive to minimize waste and smarter logistics that minimize
transportation needs.
We also offer a recycling program for the return and recycling of old ceiling
panels into new products. This program helps participants qualify for valuable
points under the LEED® rating system for construction waste management.
CertainTeed is dedicated to making a sustainable difference in as many
ways as possible. We work to provide solutions that reduce the consumption
of non-renewable resources and energy while creating productive, healthy
environments for the future. One of those solutions can be seen at our
L’Anse, Michigan manufacturing facility. The facility receives 100%
renewable electricity from the nearby Warden Electric biomass power
plant, which burns waste wood to generate power. Excess steam from
the utility is also channeled to our factory, reducing overall natural
gas consumption by 25% and earning third-party verification of carbon
footprint reduction from the Green Circle Certification System.

We believe sustainability must go hand in hand with transparency. That’s why
we’ve issued the industry’s first series of Environmental Product Declarations
(EPDs), as well as the first Health Product Declarations (HPDs). Both EPDs and
HPDs are transparency tools that help consumers and end users understand
our commitment to improve the environment and produce products with health
and well-being in mind.
EPDs are third-party verifications that confirm the true sustainability of our
products. Our EPDs are certified through UL Environment, an independent
organization working to advance global sustainability. It’s just one more way to
demonstrate how sustainability is central to everything we do. Our EPDs cover
more than 27 of our ceiling product families.
CertainTeed Ceilings, in cooperation with the Health Product Declaration
Collaborative™, a customer-led organization committed to transparency for
the building industry’s health and environmental performance, has developed
HPDs to provide a vehicle to facilitate disclosure. The HPD is an open standard
design that allows manufacturers to disclose components of their products and
help architects and owners make informed decisions about the products they
purchase and their impact on human health. HPDs are now available for over
40 CertainTeed Ceilings product families.
In addition to EPDs and HPDs, the majority of CertainTeed Ceilings products
are independently tested and certified for VOC compliance with California
Department of Public Health CDPH/EHLB/Standard Method Version 1.1, 2010.
This standard of testing is more restrictive in terms of emission reductions
than previous test versions. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), such as
formaldehyde, have been proven to have negative effects on productivity,
health conditions and occupant well-being. Today's tighter building envelopes
make Indoor Air Quality performance of paramount importance to occupant
well-being, and product transparency vehicles such as EPDs, HPDs and
Certificates of VOC Compliance provide the peace-of-mind designers and
building owners demand.

Solo®
Solo is an acoustical wood plank consisting of medium-density fiberboard
(MDF) finished in a natural wood veneer. The face is grooved, the plank
is perforated from behind and the back is laminated with an acoustically
transparent black mat, preventing insulation from showing through.
The plank is cut to fit on site and is typically installed on wood or steel
furring with insulation placed behind the wood planks.

Solo-M®
Solo-M panels are a modified version of the standard Solo product and an
economic alternative to Quadrillo finished panels. They offer large panel
size, design versatility and full customization. Solo-M is produced as a
panel rather than planks and has the same quality standards, acoustic
performance and fire rating as Solo.
Solo-M is available prefinished in clear lacquer or unfinished for post
application. Decoustics can provide custom lacquer toning and sheen
to match other wood finishes, and custom paint finishes are available.
Standard veneer lay-up is slip matched and quarter cut. Other veneer cuts
and lay-up options are available.
Solo-M panels are available in both fully grooved and stop-grooved
formats, which should be considered during the design stage. Fully grooved
panels create a monolithic appearance. Alternatively, the stop-grooved
format adds an element of detail.
The maximum size of Solo-M panels varies depending on application and
suspension methods.

the look of linear wood into your projects. You can choose from cherry, beech,
maple and ash veneers – or specify a custom veneer finish that perfectly suits
your design. FSC® certified wood is also available.
A convenient, heavy-duty T-bar grid system lets you add the distinctive charm
of a wood ceiling without compromising on ease of installation and access.
Configurations are available that provide complete access to the plenum.
Decoustics® Linear Grille
Decoustics is Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®)
certified by the Rainforest Alliance.

Wall Panels
Decoustics manufactures an extensive range of acoustical wall panels
that provide aesthetically pleasing spaces while addressing room acoustics.
Decoustics custom acoustical wall panels can be found in many applications,
such as schools, offices, auditoriums and cafeterias.
AirRenew® Wall Panels
Improve indoor air quality, room hygiene and acoustics with Decoustics’
fabric-wrapped wall and ceiling panels featuring AirRenew fabric technology.
They actively improve indoor air quality by removing potentially harmful
volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air.
Benefits of AirRenew fabric technology:
• Safely converts VOCs into carbon dioxide (CO2
) and water
• Breaks down pollutants and odors
• Protects against bacterial growth and transmission that could
otherwise damage or discolor panels
• Panel construction absorbs sound for improved room acoustics
• Ideal for schools, hospitals, nursing homes and offices
• Class A flame spread (less than 25) when tested in accordance
with ASTM E84

Ceilencio®
Ceilencio can be tailored to perfectly complement your designs without
sacrificing convenience and performance. Each Ceilencio suspension system
is custom designed, engineered and manufactured to meet the needs
of your design.
Design flexibility doesn't mean you have to sacrifice convenience or
performance. Along with the beauty Ceilencio lends to a project, it also
brings unique versatility. Ceilencio can be integrated with a number
of Decoustics materials and finishes – both acoustical and non-acoustical –
depending on the needs of your project. It also installs easily and is
100% downward accessible.
Direct Mount
Direct Mount is an acoustical ceiling system where panels are fastened to
the concealed metal suspension system using a mechanical Z-clip.
Decoustics' Direct Mount system allows for more room space (height) when
accessible areas above the ceiling are not required.
Direct Suspended
Direct Suspended is a suspension system where panels are installed
using a mechanical Z-clip to fasten to the concealed metal suspension
system. Decoustics’ Direct Suspended system provides better acoustical
absorption than panels directly applied to a solid substrate by using the
plenum/air space.
