Keynote for Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries 2017 The theory and practice of digital libraries provides a long history of thought around how to manage knowledge ranging from collection development, to cataloging and resource description. These tools were all designed to make knowledge findable and accessible to people. Even technical progress in information retrieval and question answering are all targeted to helping answer a human’s information need. However, increasingly demand is for data. Data that is needed not for people’s consumption but to drive machines. As an example of this demand, there has been explosive growth in job openings for Data Engineers – professionals who prepare data for machine consumption. In this talk, I overview the information needs of machine intelligence and ask the question: Are our knowledge management techniques applicable for serving this new consumer?

National Resource for Networks Biology's TR&D Theme 1: In this theme, we will develop a series of tools and methodologies for conducting differential analyses of biological networks perturbed under multiple conditions. The novel algorithmic methodologies enable us to make use of high-throughput proteomic level data to recover biological networks under specific biological perturbations. The software tools developed in this project enable researchers to further predict, analyze, and visualize the effects of these perturbations and alterations, while enabling researchers to aggregate additional information regarding the known roles of the involved interactions and their participants.

The result was a book (Fielding & Lee (1991) Using Computers in Qualitative Research, Sage Publications), the setting-up of the CAQDAS Networking Project and many other conferences concerning the topics over the years. https://ucsb.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYod-ippz4pHtaJ0d3ERPIFy2QIvKqjwpXR FAIRy stories: the FAIR Data principles in theory and in practice The ‘FAIR Guiding Principles for scientific data management and stewardship’ [1] launched a global dialogue within research and policy communities and started a journey to wider accessibility and reusability of data and preparedness for automation-readiness (I am one of the army of authors). Over the past 5 years FAIR has become a movement, a mantra and a methodology for scientific research and increasingly in the commercial and public sector. FAIR is now part of NIH, European Commission and OECD policy. But just figuring out what the FAIR principles really mean and how we implement them has proved more challenging than one might have guessed. To quote the novelist Rick Riordan “Fairness does not mean everyone gets the same. Fairness means everyone gets what they need”. As a data infrastructure wrangler I lead and participate in projects implementing forms of FAIR in pan-national European biomedical Research Infrastructures. We apply web-based industry-lead approaches like Schema.org; work with big pharma on specialised FAIRification pipelines for legacy data; promote FAIR by Design methodologies and platforms into the researcher lab; and expand the principles of FAIR beyond data to computational workflows and digital objects. Many use Linked Data approaches. In this talk I’ll use some of these projects to shine some light on the FAIR movement. Spoiler alert: although there are technical issues, the greatest challenges are social. FAIR is a team sport. Knowledge Graphs play a role – not just as consumers of FAIR data but as active contributors. Everybody has heard of Big Data, and its promise as the next great frontier for innovation. However, Big Data is neither new nor easily defined. What are the key drivers that make Big Data so critically important today? What is the single idea behind Big Data that promises such game changing outcomes for capable organizations? Who are the skilled talent that deliver Big Data results? This presentation briefly reviews the opportunities, motivation and trends that are driving Big Data disruption. Data science is introduced as the enabling engine for Big Data transformation via the creation of new Data Products. The data scientist is defined and his tools, workflow and challenges are reviewed. Finally, practical tips are presented for approaching data product development. Key takeaways include: - Big Data disruption is driven by four megatrends - Data is the essential raw material for creating valuable Data Products - Data scientists are heterogeneous by role & skill set, but share common tools, workflows and challenges - Data science talent is more important than raw data for Big Data success These slides are modified from an invited presentation for the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce on March 18, 2014. CDL has recently launched a new project dubbed Digital Curation for Excel (DCXL), funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and Microsoft Research. The goal of the DCXL project is to facilitate data management, sharing, and archiving for earth, environmental, and ecological scientists. The main result from the project will be an open source add-in for Microsoft Excel that will assist scientists in preparing their Excel data for sharing.

I presented this lecture at the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Berlin on Nov. 6, 2014 (see: http://www.dainst.org/termin/-/event-display/ogNX4Gtxkd87/342513) The lecture focuses on how archaeological data fits in professional practice. It looks at scholarly communications, government policies toward the sciences and humanities, and professional reward structures. The lecture then shows examples of how Open Context publishes archeological data, including editorial processes to promote data quality and relate contributed data to the 'Web of Data' using Linked Open Data methods. Research applications of Open Context and linked archaeological data include the Digital Index of North American Archaeology (DINAA) project (see: http://ux.opencontext.org/blog/archaeology-site-data/) and a data integration study exploring the development and dispersal of animal husbandry economies in Epipaleolithic - Chalcolithic Anatolia (see: http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0099845) The lecture concludes with how archaeologists need to invest more intellectually in the method and theory of modeling and creating data. It also looks at how concepts and expectations of publishing static artifacts need to be revised (using techniques like version control) to enable continued and more transparent revision of data to fix problems, implement new standards, and meet new research goals.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
