A personal invitation to (and a friendly face in) an occasionally intimidating place Regular outreach creates a bridge between the two organizations, offering the user a seamless transition between their experiences in each environment.

- We both feel like we are taking advantage of the other. Benefits exceed effort. And we have new friends.

- Not a new concept. The two systems have been working together for a long time.
- Northern Cal. School/ Pub? Southern Cal. School/Pub? Experienced/ novice/ new to collaboration...
- Overwhelmingly agree…
- Goal: to create seamless user experience. Bring patrons to the public library and bring services to the patrons.

- 1st grade:
- How often do you interact with the other…weekly/ monthly/ annually/ never Google docs, facebook, google chat, email, phone calls, text…use ‘em all
- Great opportunity to sign folks up for library cards. Any time parents are at school.
- Booklegger, Alameda County program, the public library trains volunteers to booktalk in the schools and to be storytellers. Lots of respondents from public libraries indicated that they promoted the summer reading program at schools as part of their collaboration.
- Origami cranes made at schools, displayed at BPL as the decoration for special event reading of Sadako and the 1000 paper cranes.
- Public Library cards at school to allow access to databases. Even more powerful if pub. Lib. teaches lesson on database searching. Textbooks at reference. Books for teachers… extended borrowing privileges. (Not 1 patron, 3think of it as 30 patrons…) Facilities, such as hosting an event at the other’s location. (Playreaders at Willard) Staffing/ joint groups (friends of BUSD Libraries) Scheduling meetings to allow for participation by schools and libraries. Tahoe Truckee USD’s HS seniors tutor senior citizens on computer skills at PL.
- A simple line, like the Pacific Grove Public Library, is all you need! No obvious teacher info: San Diego, LA, Humboldt, Kern
- The Humboldt County Author Festival -- a biennial event. Authors visit every K - 8 school in the county and on Saturday, the library hosts a book sale and autographing event Library in Long Beach hosts a large event for the release of each Harry Potter movie where each school builds a store from Diagon Alley which were then displayed together at the Public Library… Teen poetry contest, judged by librarians
- In some cases, multiple copies of the books can be gotten from the public library, sometimes from grants. Co-hosting eases the burden for both parties.
- Since 2000, original grant paid for materials, additional funds came later to support staffing Other programming: test prep, library card drive
- Time (so worth the initial investment) Giving but feeling like getting nothing in return. No library staff at schools or uncooperative/unresponsive staff (connect with someone else) No precedent set
