PRELABORATORY ASSIGNMENT Due at the beginning of lab period IMPORTANT: YOU MUST BRING YOURTEXTBOOK (MCMURRY. FAY 8 ROBINSON, 7TW ED.) TO THE LAB FOR THIS EXPERIMENT ta ange Consider the heating curve for H,O in Section 11.2 of your McMurry. Fay & Robinson, 7th Ed. text. 1. As heat is added to melt ice, does the temperature change? Explain what hap- pens to the heat that is added. a. For the same amount o f H,O, does it take more heat to melt ice or vaporize b. water? Explain why. -It tabes more het to mett e cluster together th a -Ice sold dthee
Solution
1) When heat is added to melt ice temperature does not change because heat added to ice gets consumed in breaking intermolecular bonds of ice. Hence it is not called sensible heat. We also call it Latent heat of fusion where latent refers to hidden.
2.)For the same amount of H2O heat required to vapourise water will be more because latent heat of vapourisation is more than latent heat of fusion. The latent heat of vaporization for water is 539.6 cal/gram and the latent heat of fusion of ice is 80 cal/g.
