2018 GM Layoffs
“The jobs that will be shed through buyouts and layoffs are held largely by people who are
experts in the internal combustion engine — mechanical engineers and others who spent
their careers working on fuel injectors, transmissions, exhaust systems and other
components that won’t be needed for the electric cars that eventually will drive
themselves”

“GM is still hiring white-collar employees, but the new jobs are for those who can write
software code, design laser sensors or develop batteries and other devices for future
vehicles”
VW to Phase Out Combustion Engines
Disruption hiding in Plain Sight

“Volkswagen’s next generation of combustion engines will roll out starting in 2026. It will be
VW’s final generation as well. VW will modify those engines through their lifetime of a
decade, maybe two, but that’s it: no more new generations of combustion engines”

Editor's Notes
1
Talk about how small efforts add up over time
The unthinkable
Talk about the different opportunities What they can focus on
What they can aspire to
I have been doing this for a while – And spend a LOT of time building these presentations
I continue to learn this space – my thinking evolves daily
I focus on disruption -
I focus on the disruption/change that’s coming – And my ideas are still evolving
My presentations are packed with info (Lots of info and insights)
My presentation are actionable - You will be able to do at least one thing after today's presentation
Not telling you to do anything I am not doing – Presentation reflects things I do or have done
This is an every year thing for me
No part of the Shield is any stronger/weaker than the other – But they all play different roles at different parts in time
Very Flexible in how you interpret this - You will see overlaps between various Sections – And that is the beauty of the Shield
Individuals don’t see Incremental Change until its too late - They’ll tell two friends – and so on and so on and so on
Incremental changes add up over time – Until its impactful
And by the time you recognize or feel the impact
You likely don’t have much time to REACT to it
No Control of Time
Waiting for perfection vs Agile
Incremental Advances are the new Normal - Months not years
Each advance gets us one step closer to the next opportunity
Was anyone paying attention to Chatbots in 2010? How about 2014 ? Well they are on the Radar Now – and here are the advances they are going to make
What is happening isn’t always obvious – until it hits you PERCEIVE it - And the actual Snowball Effect
12
Macro vs Micro issues
How do you form a plan of attack if you don’t know what to defend against
How many of you can honestly say you are focused on future impact of these technologies
How long do you think it is going to take you to react ?
Previous guidance – a LONG time
What are Companies doing
What is the impact to your field
Macro / Micro Trends (I like being the Center of Attention)
15
Talk about Customer Engagement Expectations
They are angry that their work is being passed off as though it was an AI's doing and they're not being credited....
his kind of public assault on the once-elite profession is becoming more commonplace
The machine translation and voice recognition companies are too eager to show off their technology, even when the technology is still immature. As the companies want to demonstrate that they have superior technology than competitors, they sometimes take questionable measures to create that impression.
Many simultaneous interpreters told the Chines media outlet that AI companies often put company logos on translated texts or voice based on their work, without ever acknowledging their contribution. This leads to public misunderstanding that machines can now do something much better than humans, when in fact these products are still years away from providing services comparable to humans.
“By 2022, your personal device will know more about your emotional state than your own family,”
Status info such as “Is the oil level okay?”
Owner’s manual substitute such as “How do automatic high beams work?”
“Hey, BMW, take me home” and the assistant knows where you live.
Saying “Hey BMW, I’m cold” will prompt the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant to adjust the temperature inside the car accordingly.

Could spend the most amount of time on this
This goes from Experimental to Real / Actual
Macro / Micro reference here again
Something a little different here - Principles likely go here as well ..
Categories are dependent upon the space you are in
Wouldn’t it be nice if someone did the work for you
Mention API’s here – and Applications – Not sure if I can point them out here …

Magic Dust – This is work – the AI itself isn't the issues
Focus still needs to be on – What problem are you trying to Solve – AI is just a tool (Could be start of the Video’s .. ) - Then leverage to the Shield
Align the training to the problem we are trying to solve
"We want to be the first to offer an AI undergraduate degree. I'm sure we won't be the last. AI is here to stay."
—Reid Simmons, a robotics professor and director of Carnegie Mellon’s new AI degree program
Carnegie Mellon is set to offer the first undergrad AI degree in the US, and it will include an emphasis on ethics.
Details: Students will study the ethical and societal implications of AI with professors from other departments, like social sciences and public policy. They will also have opportunities for independent study in using AI for social good (like improving transportation, healthcare, or education). Other courses will cover the hard skills: statistics and probability, computational modeling, machine learning, and symbolic computation.
Pipeline:There are a lot more companies looking for AI talent than there are qualified experts. An undergraduate degree might not be enough to build the most cutting-edge AI systems, but plenty of firms need employees that know their way around machine learning algorithms.
Why it matters:You can't be a computer scientist these days and not have some degree of AI in your skillset. And CMU's focus on ethics will help train the next generation of developers to make sure more systems are built with people in mind.
