Internal Organs • Hymen- thin ring of • Vagina- empty tissue covering the passageway leading opening of the vagina, from the vaginal divides external & opening to the uterus. internal sex organs Has 3 main functions: 1. channel for menstrual flow, 2. receptacle for the male penis during intercourse 3. birth canal
  5. 5. Internal Organs • Cervix- opening of the uterus, strongest muscle in women’s body, closed during pregnancy, open during birth • Uterus- hollow, muscular organ shaped like a pear. One main function- to protect and nourish a fetus until it is ready to live outside the womb.

Internal Organs • Fallopian Tubes- 2 tubes shaped like arched bridges • Ovaries- two solid egg • Carries the egg cell toward shaped structures the uterus and the sperm about the size of peach cell toward the egg cell pits. • Location for fertilization • 2 main functions- produce female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone and stores and releases the female egg cell
  7. 7. Other things you should know … • Time line: – Ages 9-12: secondary sex characteristics appear – Ages 11-14: menstrual cycle begins – Late 20’s-30’s- peak sexual urges – Ages 45-55 menopause
