What is the office of Disability Services? ,[object Object],The office of Disability Services in the Academic Resource Center exists to help ensure that all students at the University of Miami have equal access to the programs and services of the University according to law. In addition to providing auxiliary aids and services to students with documented disabilities, ODS also provides information about disability services to the University as a whole.,[object Object]
How does UM determine eligibility for accommodations?,[object Object],Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 ,[object Object],Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ,[object Object]
How does UM determine eligibility for accommodations?,[object Object],The ADA definition of an individual with a disability is a person who :,[object Object],a) has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more of the person`s major life activities,[object Object],b) has a record of such an impairment, or ,[object Object],c) is regarded as having such an impairment.,[object Object],The ADA applies to person who have impairments which substantially limit major life activities such as seeing, hearing, speaking, walking, breathing, performing manual tasks, learning, caring for oneself, and working. For example, an individual with epilepsy, paralysis, a substantial hearing or visual impairment, or a specific learning disability is covered under this law, but an individual with a minor, nonchronic condition of short duration, such as a sprain, broken limb, or the flu, generally would not be covered, so before you go check in make sure you meet the requirements.,[object Object]
What is the process of registering with the office of Disability Services?,[object Object],Students must provide the Office of Disability Services with appropriate documentation,[object Object],Medical Documentation,[object Object],Psychological Documentation,[object Object],Learning Disability Documentation,[object Object],ADHD Documentation,[object Object],Documentation must be reviewed,[object Object],Students must submit accommodation request form (2 week process),[object Object],Receive e-mail saying documents granted or need more info,[object Object],Student must set up a meeting with the Office of Disability Services to discuss recommendations and accommodations,[object Object],Students must give accommodation letters to their professors ,[object Object]
What is a accommodation?,[object Object],According to law, accommodations in the post secondary setting commonly refer to: ,[object Object],a) modifications to the manner of providing instruction in order to provide equal access to educational materials and ,[object Object],b) modifications to the manner of testing or measuring competence in a particular course.,[object Object],Students with disabilities are expected to meet the same standards  of academic  performances as other students, but may be allowed an accommodation in the manner in which performance in measured. ,[object Object]
Types of Accommodations,[object Object],Examples:,[object Object],-Reader for exams,[object Object],-Extended time,[object Object],-Distraction  reduced testing,[object Object],-Use of a calculator,[object Object]
Confidentiality,[object Object],The Office of Disability Services keeps students records confidential under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. ,[object Object],The only time information is released is if the student:,[object Object],a) signs Release of Information Form that gives ODS permission to speak with people like the psychologist, academic advisor, parents, etc.,[object Object],b) Situations involving hard to others or self,[object Object]
