2. The masthead NME when spoken
sounds like the word ‘enemy’ this
creates a sense of rebellion which fits
in with the branding of this product
and would appeal to a younger
generation as it is more informal than
the actual title that used to be printed
on the magazine ‘New Musical
Express’ this means that the magazine
may have experienced a larger
audience from teenagers since they
changed the masthead name. The
masthead follows most of the codes
and conventions of magazines as it is
close to the top of the page drawing a
lot of attention to itself, making it very
obvious to reader which magazine it
is.
The major sell line in black and white
bold font stands out amongst the
main theme of red, drawing
attraction to the magazine from
potential customers. however also fits
in with the edgy and punk feel to the
magazine.
The daring colour scheme of bold and
contrasting colours makes the magazine look
courageous giving readers a feeling of
confidence and exhilaration when they read the
magazine. The colours create quite a gothic
atmosphere with the black, reds and whites.
Using the celebrity personality of lily Allen
on the front cover goes well alongside the
branding and overall theme of NME as lily
Allen is known as quite a controversial and
daring personality. Having her on the front
cover would attract the audience of
teenagers as it creates a sense of rebellion.
Also using this type of shot where lily is eye
level with the camera almost gives the look
as if she is staring into it fiercely – which
again build onto of the theme of rebellion
3. The masthead of ‘rolling stone’ is mostly
covered up by the main image which may
cause confusion for buyers but mostly
people would be able to tell that is in fact
the rolling stone magazine. The masthead is
placed centred at the top of the page –
following the codes and conventions.
Moreover the light blue colour of the
masthead ties in nicely with the rest of the
colours on the front page, in fact it is the
same colour as the main sell line. Thus
causing the magazine to look professional
and consistent – therefore attracting more
buyers.
The bold and extra large main image
of Amy Winehouse takes up most of
the space on the front cover, making
Amy the main feature of the
magazine. This would be appealing to
readers of the Rollingstone as she is a
well known public figure causing
people to recognise her, also as Amy
is the news quite often people that
may have never read the magazine
may show an interest in reading it for
the first time as she has a large fan
base which would attract more
readers for the rolling stone.
The soft colour scheme of light blue,
red and white creates a clean and
classic feel to the magazine, which
goes alongside the history of the
rolling stone and how they are known
as a ‘classic’ band. This colour scheme
contrasts to the main image which is
built up of mostly dark tones and
colours – drawing more attraction to
the main image and selling point of
this issue of the magazine.
4. The main image of Lana del ray
wearing a white dress symbolises that
she is pure however this contrasts to
her red provocative lips, her tongue
sticking out and her bold hands on
her hips stance – therefore reflecting
that she is breaking the stereotype
and inflicting a sense of rebellion
which is the main theme of the
magazine NME
The masthead is white and bold, going
nicely alongside the picture of Lana
and the American flag as the
background. The masthead is very
clear to see and ties in nicely with the
colour scheme – making the front
cover of this issue look consistent and
collective.
The colour scheme of blue white and
red is very patriotic towards America,
emphasising Lana Del Rays public
figure as she is an American singer –
this may signify to the audience that
this will be a patriotic issue which
may cause a larger amount of people
to want to buy this issue
The main selling point implies rebellion
and daring behaviour as it describes
Lana as a psycho which goes with the
main image – making this the unique
selling point of the magazine.
