TRF Sustainable Roles
1. Group 1: native Maué Indian family
We would like to keep to our
traditional ways as much as
possible.
We would prefer foreigners to stay
away from our area, though the
chief says that if we cut down and
burn too many trees, people from
the big city might come and move us
out of our homelands
Group 2: Ministry of the Interior (Brazilian government) - Renato Boreato
Our job is to balance the needs of local people (both
tribal people and settlers) and the country’s need to
make money from the Amazon in order to help our
millions of poor people.
But we also have to take into account that we are
responsible for the largest area of rainforest on the
planet, “the lungs of the earth”, which is vital for
people everywhere, not just in Brazil. Of course we
also have a responsibility to protect the amazing
biodiversity (plants and animals).
2. Group 3: The Da Silva’s - settlers from Sao Paulo
We came here to escape the
hustle and bustle of the city.
We hear there is money to be
made in the rainforest if you are
clever – but we don’t want to
destroy the rainforest.
Group 4: Research students from Oxford University, studying sustainable
development of rainforests
We are looking to assess the successes
and failures of different sustainable
development projects in rainforest
areas around the world, in order to
share good ideas and learn from
others’ mistakes.
Of course we all really care about the
rainforest – that’s why we want to
study it, to help preserve the
environment for future generations.
3. Group 5: Greenpeace
We are an independent global
campaigning organisation that
acts to change attitudes and
behaviour, to protect and
conserve the environment and
to promote peace.
