Some are used to keep people informed of activities within the department. Some are used to compile statistical information, identify problems in the community, or identify department training needs. Some reports are needed to facilitate investigations, prepare court cases, or defend cases in court.

A Recommendation Report is a detailed report submitted to a reader or a group of readers who are usually in a position of authority -- supervisors, managers, department heads, company buyers, elected officials, civic leaders -- to endorse or reject the writer’s plan or choose from among their recommendations.

Examples of self-reports are questionnaires and interviews; self-reports are often used as a way of gaining participants responses in observational studies and experiments. Self-report in studies have validity problems. Patients may exaggerate symptoms in order to make their situation seem worse, or they may under-report the severity or frequency of symptoms in order to minimize their problems.
