• The Library has subject guides in many different topics.
• These guides list dictionaries, encyclopedias,
handbooks, directories, databases and websites in a
variety of subjects.
• To access these subject guides online: Go to the
homepage at http://library.lakeheadu.ca and under “Find”
select “Resources by Subject”

• To find books and journals, go to our Online Library
Catalogue.
• You can access the catalogue from the Library home
page.

11. Searching the Online Catalogue
• You can search the Online Catalogue by title keyword,
journal title, author, subject heading or keyword.
Examples:
Title: Adult health nursing
Journal Title: Lancet
Author: Austen, Jane
Subject: Nursing - Periodicals
Keyword: “breast cancer” (Use quotes to search for a
phrase ) then limit to the Northern Studies Resource

19. Finding Course Reserves and Past Exams
• Course Reserves are materials that your instructor has
placed in the Library for your use.
• You can find course reserves and past exams on the
Library’s home page.
• Go to our Library home page and select the “Reserves”
tab.
• Select either the last name of your instructor or the
course number and name and click on “Search”

26. Locating journal articles on a topic
• In order to find an article on a specific subject, you need
to use a journal index or database.
• The index/database provides basic citation information
(journal title, volume, page and year)
• Some indexes and databases provide full-text journal
articles
• Go to the Library home page and select Articles &
Databases under “Find”

• What is CINAHL?
• is the authoritative resource for nursing and allied
health professionals, students, educators and
researchers. This database provides indexing for more
than 3,000 journals from the fields of nursing and allied
health. The database contains more than 2.3 million
records dating back to 1981

available in the Library?
There are 2 ways:
1. If it says Linked Full text next to the article – click on it and
you can view the entire article
2. Click on the icon to check if we have the journal and
the article in the Library

• When would you use a Keyword search in CINAHL ?
• A Keyword search would be useful when you want to
combine multiple terms that do not appear as a CINAHL
Subject Term.

52. Peer Reviewed Journals
• Many times you will be asked to look for scholarly,
academic, refereed or peer reviewed journals. What
does that mean?
• Peer reviewed" or "Refereed" is a formal process
undertaken by experts in a field to determine the quality
of an article before it is accepted and published in a
journal.

How do I know that a journal is peer reviewed?
1. Check the first few pages of a print journal issue for a
list of reviewers or an editorial board and the editorial
policy.
2. Consult Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory for a list of
refereed journals. (Ref. Z 6941 U45 Located in Ready
Reference Collection behind Reference Desk).
3. Some databases will offer an option of searching for
scholarly or peer-reviewed journals.

57. To View a List of the Library’s E-journals
• To view a list of the Library’s E-journals, use the E-
Journals link on the Library’s home page.
• Tip: This is a very good option if you are looking for a specific
journal.
Remember: you can not search for journal articles on a specific topic
from the E-journals page.

58. Connecting from home
• When you access past exams, e-journals and most of
our electronic resources from off-campus, you will need
to login with your Lakehead University email username
and password.
• Remember to omit the @lakeheadu.ca after your
username.

• In order to use our interlibrary loan system RACER , you must first register for it.
• Once you have registered for RACER, you can access the system and order your
articles.
