Peering into Sakai 3's Teaching & Learning Future
David Goodrum, Lance Speelmon
Tuesday, 9/28 10:00 – 11:00
Room: Hoosier
Sakai 3 is an exci,ng development effort based largely around combining
teaching and learning with social networking concepts. In this session you will
be informed about the conceptual thinking behind the project, and the
transi,on from research and development to a fully managed project. You will
also get an early glimpse of the first formal deliverable as well as a peek into
what is being termed "hybrid" that will allow for a seamless integra,on
between the more tradi, onal Sakai 2 user interface and Sakai 3's revamped
interface.
3. a new level of software for higher ed:
an open academic environment
for a community
of learners
teachers
scholars
& researchers
4. a new level of software for higher ed:
an open academic environment
flexible and controllable workspaces
people, academic networking, and groups
rich content development
resource discovery and use
collaboration, communication, and sharing
openness and permeability
5. a new level of software for higher ed:
an open academic environment
in teaching and learning:
the assembly and synthesis
of content, guidance, interactions, and assessments
into cohesive learning experiences
6. exciting development effort
design led
advanced technology
HTTP REST engine with content management system
Documented REST endpoints for every service
Dynamic HTML/JS/CSS based user interface
Much, much simpler to integrate external systems
PHP, ASP, ruby, etc.
curl -F":sitepath=/foo" -F"name=Foo" -F"description=foo" -F"id=foo" http://localhost/sites.createsite.json
refined user experience
9. transition from research and
development to a fully managed project
four stages of development for Sakai projects:
1.R&D
2.Incubation (ie. planning and resource recruitment)
3.Product Development (ie. executing on the plan)
4.Maintenance
Sakai 3 project comprises second and third stages
team members report to the project director and area leads
planned quarterly milestone releases
10. managed project
- Sakai 3 Steering Group
a project steering committee oversees project priorities,
deliverables and timelines.

11. early glimpse of Sakai hybrid
critical to transition and evolution:
provide full functionality as capabilities move to Sakai 3
system migration is always challenging
transition solution which loosely combines both systems
different than the standard marketplace approach
shallower ramp-up and longer tail
path to integrate with many 3rd party systems
