Masthead - It has been written in a bright white sans serif font in the top left of the magazine cover. This font has been chosen as to not give off a formal impression, therefore appealing to the magazine’s target audience of teens to young adults. The colour has been chosen as it stands out against the main image’s hair and background therefore attracting the target audience. The mast head also stands for ‘New Musical Express’. The words used such as ‘new’ makes it more appealing to the target audience as it sounds exiting and the latest thing. Underneath the masthead is the issue number and price of the magazine which is £2.40 which is a suitable price to the spending power of its target audience. It has been written in a small font as their price is not the companies selling point, as opposed to other rival magazines who may have cheaper prices that are usually advertised through pugs. The magazine company has chosen to put the bar code in the bottom right hand corner. This has been done as space efficiently possible due to the fact bar codes have to be present on the front cover. The choice to have the bar code in the bottom right enables more room for other cover lines, and does not distract the reader from the content of the magazine as this is the last thing they will see. Along the right hand side of the front cover are cover lines which state what other content is in the magazine. The sans serif font has been written against a white box background at a diagonal angle as opposed to the usual column text seen in magazines. The colours used of white, light blue and black comply with the colour scheme. The editors have chosen to put the text in a form of pug with a slight drop shadow connoting a chaotic and unique layout. This has been done to follow the same diagonal layout as the main cover line as a sense of continuity. This is the main image of the singer Lana Del Rey. She has been positioned within the center column within the rule of thirds, in order for her to be the main focus of the magazine. The shot taken is a mid shot as to catch the pose she is standing in to convey her body language in the picture. She is looking directly into the camera (also known as direct address) as to give the impression that she is looking into the eyes of the audience, making the reader feel engaged. The costume and pose that has been chosen to comply with Laura Mulvey’s theory of ‘The Male Gaze’ due to the provocative clothing used done to attract the male audience to her. This is the main cover line written in a sans serif font in the colours black and blue. The text goes across the main image with the artist’s name in a bigger font and different colour. This is done to show the relationship between the main image and cover line to inform the audience who she is. The quote used is an emotive quote with buzz words such as ‘psycho’ which will intrigue the audience making them want to find out why. The picture also relates to the main image due to the face she is pulling connoting that the artist is not your usual artist, she is unique, therefore engaging the user. The background is not the usual plain background used in NME to allow focus on the artist, but instead the American flag has been used to reflect the main cover line. The background still allows for the text to stand out against the background, therefore still engaging the audience. The flag stops halfway down the page as studies show that the audience’s gains interest in the magazine from the top half of the magazine, therefore the flag stops halfway down in order to catch the readers eye straight away. Here are pugs along the top right hand side of the magazine The buzz word ‘FREE’ has been written the biggest font within the pug as the word ‘free’ attracts the audience as they will not have to pay for these posters, however this is also misleading as you have to pay for the magazine in order to get the posters. The sub images are layered over each other to show the audience what posters will be inside. In the bottom left side of the page written in a Sans font is the word ‘Plus ’ showing other contents in the magazine, separated by blue squares, keeping intact with the colour scheme. This feature is done to give the impression to the audience that their magazine is value for money as it implies that the magazine is full of content, persuading the user to buy the magazine. Also by adding this extra information it creates a busy atmosphere to the overall appearance of the magazine, connoting that at a quick glance the audience will think that there is a lot going on within the magazine. The complimentary colour scheme used for the magazine is blue, white and black. The bright colours stand out against the background and are eye-catching to the audience. The target audience for this magazine is young adults who have like the genre of rock music, although NME has created issued aimed at other genres of music to try and attract a wider audience and gain a greater profit. The magazine also complies with the rule of thirds to give a professional finish to the magazine. This magazine represents young people as odd and going against society due to the pose the model is pulling, the diagonal style of text and the use of words ‘psycho’. Underneath is the date of magazine’s issue also reflecting a newspaper style, creating an overall mature theme, whilst also connoting that the magazine will contain a lot of factual information like a newspaper. At the bottom right of the page a subscription section. This is the only part of the magazine with a bright red background, therefore making this part of the contents page eye-catching and engaging the reader’s interest. The use of yellow font has been used to highlight important selling features of the subscription, for example the ‘£46’ is in yellow font. This draws in the reader, persuading them to subscribe as most people want to save money. However the star indicates that this price may vary. At the bottom there are previous issues of NME magazines all overlapping each other with parts of the magazine going off the page. This is done to create an impression of lots of magazines, connoting that the customer would be getting good value for money. To the right hand side of the contents page is the content of what is going to be in the magazine with the page numbers to the bottom right of the sub image . There are play on words ‘smells like free posters’ to reflect the track ‘smells like teen spirit’ which fans of this band will pick up on. Also the word ‘free’ will intrigue the audience, whilst also the italic font connotes something different and exciting as italics is not a prominent font in this contents page. It is also unusual that the main cover line on the front page is not in the centre of the contents page connoting that there could be more interesting articles than the main cover line. Also the foul language used such as ‘bullshit’ re enforces the target audience of younger adults. It also gives a chatty and informal language which relates to the audience. In the centre of the rule of thirds is a main image of the artist Noel Gallagher with a page number in the bottom right indicating where the information is within the magazine. There is also a quote underneath written in italics to emphasize that this is something he said. There is a touch of humour to this quote, making the reader laugh, yet the quote makes the reader ask questions, making them want to find out more. To the left hand side of the contents page there are more cover stories with sub images with page numbers. Along this column within the rule of thirds is a competition , therefore enticing the reader to carry on reading as there is a change to win festival tickets. Also the type of festival being advertised on the contents page reflects the target audience and genre of this magazine which is rock. The language used to describe each part of the contents is set out as a headline that you would see in a newspaper, yet language used relates to the target audience. There is a mix between whether the font used is in bold or not, which has been done to draw the reader to certain parts of the magazine which the company believes will spark an interest with the reader. A ‘ plus’ feature has been placed here, written in a sans font and in italics. It shows extra content within the magazine, and the word ‘plus’ makes it seem that there is a lot of content within. The titles of each feature underneath are not very explanatory in what the content of that article is, therefore intriguing the audience and also creates an element of surprise. The page numbers feature above the article title, giving a modern look to the usual side by side layout. This has been done to relate to the their target audience of young people as by having an unusual and modern layout appeals to the younger generation. The overall layout of this contents page is very simplistic with an unusual layout as to stating the content of the magazine as opposed to traditional contents pages. This has been done so the magazine creates a unique look which appeals to the target audience. Also this style of contents page has been adapted to try and bring in a wider audience as previous NME contents pages have been purely rock focused as shown below, where as now it has been set out more like a newspaper, to try and attract a more mature audience. There is no synergy relationship with the contents page and the front cover. This contents page is predominantly black and white which has been done to make the pictures stand out, with a splash of colour for subscription to attract the audience’s eye.

The props used of the coke bottle and converse is relatable to the reader, as it looks like a typical summer afternoon setting many everyday people encounter. This makes the artist seem more relatable to the reader, and encourages the reader to read more about her. It also represent s her and her fans as quite relaxed. The shot is a medium close up where the artist is looking directly into the camera, giving off a friendly atmosphere. The caption n the bottom right could be seen as quite humorous, or to also create curiosity within the reader due to the fact the caption uses a rhetorical question. The caption has been written on a blue background which fits in with the colour scheme. The title of the article reads “’I’m so nervous…”. The use of this pull quote has been chosen as the title as it gives a sense of personalization to the double page spread, relating to the Uses and Gratification theory, Blulmer and Katz 1974. The colour scheme of the blue has been used as this is the same colour used for the main cover line on the contents page. This shows synergy between the two pages, creating a subconscious link within the audience. The blue has also been chosen as it stands out against the background. The quotation marks are in an orange colour as this is part of the complimentary colour scheme. Underneath the heading Is the subheading in where names have been written in a blue colour. This has been done so the names mentioned gain recognition and stand out to the reader. The text used for the subheading is a serif font in italics. This has been done to create a sophisticated look to the magazine, which represents the magazine’s target audience as classy and want reliable information. Underneath the subheading is the article which has been split into three columns. The use of having three columns on the double page spread creates a professional look whilst also sticking to the rule of thirds. Each column has also been separated by orange dots, which gives definition to the columns whilst also reflecting the colour scheme. Drop caps have been used and have been written in an orange colour. This has been done to reflect to catch the eye of the reader whilst sticking to the colour scheme. The use of having two drop caps allows the reader to see when new information begins, giving the impression that the magazine is full of content, meaning that they will be getting good value for money. Sub images have been used that overlay each other and go over the double page spread. These images have been used to break up the text and to make the page seem more exciting, persuading the reader to read on. The images have a white border around them with a slight drop shadow to give a 3D effect and to make them jump off the page, which will catch the eye of the reader. Captions have been included on both of these images which have been placed in a blue box. This has been done so the caption stands out to the audience. Both these images are contrasting as it shows the artist as glamorous, and not so glamorous. This has been done so the reader feels as if they get more of a look into her life and gain more information on her life, glamorous or not glamorous. By having a feature of a time line it creates a unique feature of the magazine that may not be done in others. It also represents the artist as successful due to the amount she has accomplished. There is a blue pug in the centre of the text. It has a black outline to give the impression of a target to shoot at. This has been done to show the link between the quote used in the centre of the pug ‘fighting for survival’. This pull quote has been used as it is an unusual statement that will draw in the reader’s attention making them want to read the article as the quote sparks up curiosity. The masthead has also been designed in such a way, with the red square round it, it has now become a logo as it recognised across the country. The colour chosen for the mast head is white so it stands out against the background and a serif font has been used in order to give the magazine a more mature look relating to a more mature target audience. Here is the main cover line with the artist's name written in a sans serif font, yet written in a typography as to give the impression that the artist has signed the magazine cover. This connotes as a sense of personalisation to the user, making the user feel in some way connected to the artist. The language devices used creates a harsh sound yet intrigues the audience. The colour used still complies with the colour scheme and fits with the rule of thirds. This is a promotional cover line. The sans serif font fits the colour scheme of black and pink and is written in capital letters to draw in the audience’s attention. The word ‘exclusive’ has been written in a bigger font as this buzz word connotes that this magazine contains content that no other magazine has, persuading the user to buy it. This is a cover line which could also be seen as a selling line Diagonal pugs are used with each square in alternate colours of yellow and pink to keep with the colour scheme. The way this banner? has been presented creates a 3D effect, giving the impression that this feature is jumping off of the page, attracting the eye of the user. The words used such as ‘must’ creates a hyperbole persuading the audience to but it. The colour scheme used if red, pink, yellow, black and white. These colours used are bold and eye catching to attract the target audience. The target audience of this magazine is predominantly for a more mature audience, due to the content and price of the magazine. Also this magazine tries to appeal to a wide variety of genres of music therefore appealing to a greater audience creating a greater profit.

This has been done to show clearly what issue the magazine is at a quick glance. By having the issue number as a pug it can be seen as a quirky design feature, or it may connote that the company is promoting its successful history and shows the audience that it is a well established magazine. This could link to the uses and gratification theory, in that the if the audience buys this magazine they will have the latest information. Underneath to the main image are sub images . They are same in size with the page number in a red bock in the bottom left of the image, indicating the page in which the article will be. By not having a caption underneath the image creates curiosity with the reader as they do not know what the article is about. However there is information about these articles directly to the left. The images have been placed here to make the page more eye catching to the reader. The arrows to the side of the image show that the contents page stretches over more than one page, which gives the sense that there is a lot of information in the magazine, where as in reality there may not be that much content, as the majority of the space has been taken up by images. Unlike other music magazine, the contents page for Q spreads over 3 pages in which conventions such as subscriptions, editors letters and many more. The overall layout of these other pages are similar to the layout of this first contents page, following the same colour scheme, font and layout to create synergy and continuity within the pages to show that these pages are all part of the contents. The company may have decided to spread the contents over 3 pages to imply the vast amount of content in the magazine, therefore showing that the customer will be getting good value for money. At the bottom of the magazine is the date, page number and mast head which can also be seen as a logo. There is also a website address towards the right hand side where the reader can go to subscribe. The website is ‘www.greatmagazines.co.uk’ which emphasizes the fact that this magazine is one of the best. To the left hand side of the rule of thirds is the column ‘ features ’ in which shows more content of the magazine. At the top of this column there is a sub image with the heading ‘140 songs to download now’ which has been written in a large, black sans serif font. The use of the word ‘now’ creates a sense of urgency therefore persuading the reader to download them. The font has been written in a bigger font compared to the rest of the text as to catch the eye of the reader. Underneath the page number and colour of the text is different to the rest of the text that follows. The page number has been increased and the font has been enlarged and changed to the colour red. This has been done again to catch the eye of the reader, as this section of the contents page is different, therefore will make the reader read it. Underneath is more content of the magazine listed out in the same style, each separated by a thin black line. By having the same layout it connotes a more professional look the magazine. The graphic image of the mouse is used to reinforce the idea of downloading. It also gives the impression that it is clicking on the sub image to show the audience this an example of what you could download. It also gives the impression to the audience that it is quick and easy to download. There is a simplistic colour scheme used of red and black. This colour scheme is prominent in many articles within the magazine, making the magazine seem more professional and will also make the audience remember the magazine. The colours chosen of red gives an emotional impact on the audience which connotes success and that the magazine is passionate about music.

The reason the company have chosen to have the artists’ names as the headline is show that the focus of the article is purely on them. It also reflects the overall simplistic layout of the double page spread. By having the artists’ names also makes it easy for the reader to determine who the article is about quick and easily. Underneath the headline is the subheading ‘Hip hop’s superpowers lose nothing going back to basics’. This is a powerful subheading as it reflects the simplistic style of the double page spread by using the word ‘basics’. By personifying hip-hop as to have ‘superpowers’ gives of a very powerful image of the genre, promoting it to be one of the best and has a big impact yet a good impact on its audience. The subheading has been written in a red serif font. The serif font style shows the sophistication of the magazine, whilst also represents its target audience and fans of hip-hop as mature and sophisticated. The red used complies with the colour scheme and reflects the logo in the top left of the ‘Q’. Underneath this is where the report was written, what the date was and how many starts the journalist would rate it. By including this gives off a newspaper look to the article, connoting that this article contains a reliable source of information. The use of having 4 stars will also persuade the audience to read the article as they would want to know why their performance was so good. Directly underneath the subheading is the text. It has been written in a white sans font. The white has been chosen as it contrasts against the black background and the serif font allows for the reader to believe that this is a reliable source of information. It also connotes that a sophisticated and mature look to the magazine. There is also use of drop caps which are typical conventions of an article. They are used to draw the eye of the reader in. Two drop caps have been used to show the beginning of a new paragraph. This has been done as it gives the illusion that there is a lot of information within these articles due to the use of two drop caps. At the end of the text is a red box with three white arrows to indicate that the article carries on over two pages. This has been done to give the impression to the audience that there is a lot of information about these two artist as it goes over more than two pages. Though this may not be the case due to the fact that there is not much text on this page due to the large main image used to draw the eye in of the reader. To the right hand side of the double page spread is a feature called ‘Set List’. It has been written in a white box with a large black serif font with the text all in caps. This has been chosen to make this feature stand out to the audience. Underneath this title is a list of all the songs that the artist sings for their performance. The list of songs takes up the majority of the right hand side, telling the audience that if they go pay to see the artist they will be getting their moneys worth. The red line along the left makes the text seem in line and placed in a neat order. The colour red has been used to tie in the colour scheme. This feature is not a typical feature of a double page spread, making this magazine unique, therefore will gain a bigger audience. To the bottom right of the double page spread is a caption that has been written in a red box with a white sans serif font. The caption makes a humorous reference to the main image. This has been done to create a funny feel to the audience, making them feel involved within the article. The use of the sans serif font has been chosen to reflect this humorous feel, and the red background has been used to make the caption stand out. Underneath is the page number, date and logo . The logo has been placed here to make sure that the magazine gains more recognition therefore will sell more copies. The monochromatic colour scheme used is a key colour scheme used throughout the magazine, making the audience relate the colours to the brand name Q, giving more recognition to the company. This is unusual compared to other music magazines. This could be done due to the fact that this magazine is of a rock genre, therefore the magazine layout does not follow the usual structure. The typography used accentuates the rock genre theme as the typography looks like shattered glass. This expresses the rock genre as it connotes that people who like rock fit in with the stereotype of destroying things. The colour black also fits with the genre as black is often associated with rock and also stands out against the background. Here is the main image of lead singers from a variety of different rock bands connoting that this magazine is aimed at every hybrid of rock genre such as heavy metal or indie rock, therefore appealing to a greater audience to make more profit.. The colour scheme is a complimentary colour scheme, however there are some colour clashes to enhance the rock genre In the center column of the rule of thirds is the main cover line of the magazine. It has been written in a yellow pug to make the main cover line stand out against the page. The sere is a mixture of font and colours used for the main cover line to tie in the colour scheme and make the main cover line eye-catching. Images such as records have been used instead on 0s to enforce the musical aspects of the magazine. Also by saying that certain bands present, gives a sense of a relationship between the user and the artist, as the artist is presenting something to us. Persuasive words used such as ‘need’ also entice the reader making them want to buy the magazine. To the left hand side of the magazine are different cover lines separated by a black line to show a clear divide between each cover line. A sans serif font has been used with all text in capitals, with alternating colour schemes to show continuity. Repetition has been used such as the word ‘new’ to create an exciting atmosphere persuading the reader to buy it as the magazine contains the latest content. Colloquial language is used such as words like ‘lowdown’ to make the magazine appeal to its target audience of younger people who are interested in the rock genre. On the opposite side of the rule of thirds are more cover lines following the same layout as the cover lines on the right side, creating a professional finish. There are also sub images used so the audience can make links between the text and image. Buzz words and punctuation such as exclamation marks creates a busy and informal layout connoting a relationship with the target audience as it appeals to them and persuades them to buy the product. As with the previous magazine front covers, the bar code has been placed in the bottom right hand corner for the most space efficiency in the magazine. The price has also been put above the bar code as this is not their main selling feature. Although this magazine is the cheapest out of the 3 music magazines I have analysed, the front cover is very over crowded and the company could feel that by advertising the price could take up space that could be used to sell the content of their magazine. At the bottom of the magazine is a footer with text written in a sans serif font with colours of white and yellow which still fit in with the colour scheme. Words used such as ‘exclusive’ is an emotive language device as it connotes that the magazine contains content not available anywhere else, therefore persuading the audience to purchase the magazine. . The magazine represents their target audience as a typical rock stereotype of loud music, and part of riots. The overall magazine does not fit Laura Mulvey’s ‘male gaze’ theory, as most rock magazines do not focus on attracting people through provocative women, but to distinguish their own unique look, to be different from the crowd.

The mast head has been placed in the banner in which the typography looks like smashed glass, emphasizing the rock genre but also to create synergy with the front page. The colour choice of yellow has been used to stand out against the background. Typography has been used as if the text ‘contents’ has been scratched away, reflecting the rock genre. The issue number has been included to reflect the magazine’s history and success, reassuring the reader that this is one of the best magazines. At the bottom of magazine it the convention of the editors letter . The language in which it is written is of a colloquial language, which has been done to appeal to the target audience and also makes them feel involved. The letter looks as if it has been personally signed by the editor, therefore creating a sense of personalization, fitting in with the uses and gratification theory, Blulmer and Katz (1974). To the right of the editors letter is a sub image of the editor and the band Twin Atlantic. This has been done to create curiosity to the reader, intriguing them to read the letter to find out why the editor is with that band. To the bottom right of the contents page is the subscription box . It has been placed in a black background to make the text stand out, which has been done to catch the eye of the audience therefore persuading them to subscribe, resulting in a bigger profit. There is a blue banner that goes across at the top and bottom of the subscription box stating ‘K! Subscribe’. The repetition of this sentence has been done to persuade the audience to subscribe. The image at the bottom left shows magazines placed overlaying each other to give the impression that there is a lot of magazines, implying that the user would get good value for money. The left hand side of the magazines have also been chosen as predominantly the left hand column of the rule of thirds is the most busiest. This has been chosen to imply to the reader that each magazine contains a lot of content, again expressing good value for money. The pug here is in the shape of an arrow to imply that this feature is related to the main image. The colour of blue used does not comply with the yellow and black colour scheme, yet it does reflect some of the blue in the images and banner for subscription. The colour choice has been used to make this feature of the contents page stand out and attract the audience. Listed in the pug are the contents with the page numbers to the right. The use of the word ‘preview’ has been chosen to gain the reader’s interest and make them want to read on. The pug has been placed over the top of the column of contents to make the pug stand out. Here is the list of contents which fits in with the rule of thirds. It has been set out with headings that have been placed in a black rectangle with yellow sans serif font. The typography of the text continues throughout showing synergy and to convey the rock genre theme. The page numbers have been written in a red font and are placed to the left hand side of the text. The list of contents continues underneath the pug. This also elongates the text, giving the impression that there is a lot of content in the magazine. The overall layout of the contents page is very busy and chaotic, which reflects the genre of music and also represents their target audience as chaotic and out of control, which is emphasizing the stereotypical rock genre. Here is the main image of a band which will feature in the magazine. There is no caption to the main image, which has been done to create curiosity to the reader. The pose being pulled by the band reflects the stereotypical rock genre of violence and being out of control. This has been done to appeal to their target audience, or could also connote a busy and exciting atmosphere which will intrigue the audience.

Along the centre of the double page spread is the article’s heading . The heading reads ‘Sound of the Overground’. This is a play on the phrase ‘sound of the underground’ and can also signify that this band is now recognised on a large scale and have sold many records. This has been used to tie in the basic colour scheme. The colours used are also rather bright to make the text stand out and catch the reader’s eye and to also stand out against the dark background. The text goes over both double page spreads and only takes up about a third of the whole double page spread. The layout is typical of an article beginning with a sub heading . The subheading is in a bold serif font and is larger than the article text. This is a typical layout of an article mostly used in newspapers. It has been done to attract the eye of the reader. The bands name is written in a blue colour to reflect the colour scheme and to make the band’s name stand out to the audience, informing them who the article is about if they are unfamiliar with the band. The text begins with a dropped capital which are conventions predominantly used in articles. It is written in a yellow font to reflect the colour scheme. There is another dropped capital later on in a blue colour. It is unusual to have two dropped capitals in an article. This could be done to reflect the stereotypical view of the rock genre not complying to the rules. The text has been written in three columns to comply with the rule of thirds to give a professional look. The white box surrounding the text has been Photoshopped with a slight transparency so we can still see the image underneath. This quote is an example of a pull quote as it engages the reader and gives the sense that the artist is talking to the reader making them feel involved. The white sans serif font used also reflects the chatty language and also the white stands out against the background.

This feature has been added to persuade the audience to buy their magazine as words used like ‘No1’ tells the reader that this is the best magazine they can buy. Also this selling line also makes the target audience clear as it states that this magazine is for women. Across the mast head is a pug which has been used to advertise the price of the magazine – ‘Only £2’. By having the price shown in a big font in a pug makes the price stand out to the audience showing them that the price is good value for money. The use of the word ‘only’ also makes the audience feel that the price of this magazine is cheap, therefore creating the audience to buy the magazine, resulting in a bigger profit. The masthead takes up the whole width of the magazine and has been placed at the top of the front cover to show importance and to easily tell the audience what the magazine is called. The masthead has been written in a big sans serif font and in capitals. This has been done so the text looks informal therefore relating to the audience as it gives a chatty feel to the magazine. It has also been written in an orange colour to comply with the colour scheme. The colour is also bright therefore the magazine becomes more eye-catching to the audience. Underneath the masthead is the magazines website address and directly opposite is the issue date. This is done to give more information to the audience. The main cover line is unusual as it does not relate to the main image unlike most magazines. However this main cover line has been chosen to fit stereotypical views on women and shopping. The sans serif font has been chosen again and the size varies to draw in the reader’s attention. The colour scheme of black and orange has still been used to create continuity within the front cover. Informal word choices have been used such as ‘soooo’ to create a chatty feel making the magazine more relatable to the target audience. The number of ‘703’ has been chosen to create a sense that the magazine contains a lot of content therefore is value for money. The main image of the celebrity Reese Witherspoon has been placed in the centre column of the rule of thirds. The main image goes over the masthead to give a 3D feel and also so the main image attracts the audience. However, it is only the head of the model that goes in front of the masthead and the rest of the body goes behind, therefore the face of the model attracts the reader. The model is also looking directly into the camera to make the reader feel involved in the magazine. The location in which the model is posing on a sofa. This connotes how this magazine is suitable to be read in your own home for leisure, therefore appealing to the target audience. It could also connote that the celebrity used seems to be relaxing like every day to day people, therefore making the magazine more relatable to them. The choice of clothing used could fit with Laura Mulvey’s theory of ‘The Male Gaze’ as the dress she is wearing is very short. To the right side of the magazine are cover lines that fit into rule of thirds. The colour scheme of white orange and black is continuous. The sans serif font has been used with font varying in size to draw attention to certain emotive words. This has been done to draw in the readers interest to make them but the magazine. To the left hand side are more cover lines that comply with the rule of thirds. The colour scheme is still prominent creating continuity. Emotive language and choice of titles used for these cover lines have been used to make the reader ask questions, therefore making them want to buy the magazine. In the bottom right hand corner is the bar code . The magazine company has hidden the bar code here to create as much space efficiency. It has also been placed at the bottom as this is the last thing the audience will see, and by the time they see the bar code, the decision would have already been made whether to purchase this item. It has also been placed over the models legs due to the fact by placing the bar code here it will not hid any other conventions of the magazine. The monochromatic colour scheme has been chosen to reflect the simplistic layout, whilst the colour orange adds brightness to catch the eye of the audience. The target audience of this magazine is for women, which has been represented with stereotypical views of shopping and relationships. The less busy layout has been chosen to create a calm and relaxing feel to the magazine to create a more mature look, appealing more to the target audience.

This has been placed here to inform the reader of where more information can be found on their website. To the left hand side of the rule of thirds is the contents of the magazine which have been divided into different sections to make it easier for the reader to see what articles feature in the magazine. Each section follows a different colour scheme for the title of the section, which complies with the colour used in the mast head. The layout of the text for each article follows the same structure with the same sans serif font with the title in bold and the page numbers following the colour scheme. This has been done to create a professional look to the magazine and to create continuity throughout the layout as the same layout follows on to the next page, informing the audience that the contents page goes over two pages. To the left of the magazine is the main image of Elizabeth Olsen. The shot is a medium long shot of the model sitting on a chair smiling. She is also looking directly into the camera (direct address) to make the reader feel involved in the magazine, creating a sense of personalization. She is wearing a yellow dress to reflect the spring theme whilst also creating a happy atmosphere, making the reader feel cheerful and encourages them to read on. The use of having her sat on a chair also creates a calm atmosphere to the reader, which represents their target audience as calm and relaxed people who like simplicity. The use of having the serif font connotes a more sophisticated look, which could show that this competition is a serious one. The sub images and text used below show the reader what prizes could be won if they enter their competition. By spreading the text over a whole column and using different images connotes that this competition contains lots of prizes that would be worth entering for. The sub headings used follow the colour scheme used in the title to show continuity. A bold text has been used to make the prizes stand out to the audience, making them believe that there are a vast amount of prizes to be won. Right at the bottom is a very small font are the prices of entering. This has been written in a small font as this is not a selling feature of the magazine. Separated by a pink line in the centre of the two columns are more contents of the magazine, which is set out as the same layout as the first contents page. The headings are again in bold and follow the colour scheme of the title. The reason the layout of font and style is the same as the first contents page is to show continuity between the two pages so it is apparent to the audience what the page is, and it also creates a professional look. However, both pages have been set out in only two columns which is unusual in a magazine as it does not follow the rule of thirds. This could be done because the magazine is only A5 size therefore by having three columns of text could create a busy atmosphere, which would not comply with the overall simplistic look of their magazine which has been designed to fit their target audience’s preferences.

The costume and make up used are quite simplistic and bare, connoting that this person has striped back to reveal all their secrets. This will intrigue the audience as they will want to read on. The dress worn however is very low cut in which we can see her underwear. This fits in with Laura Mulvey’s male gaze theory, as this image can be seen as quite provocative. The main heading has been written in a large serif font such as a Times New Roman. This has been done to show the seriousness of the magazine, as this article is on a serious topic. The celebrities name is written in a larger font to the rest of the heading to show that the focus of the article is about her. The colloquial and informal title of ‘Let’s talk about Demi’ shows that the article is all about her life, which fans of her will take an interest in. Also this heading could represent the target audience of women as gossips, as the heading suggests that there are secrets involved in the article. The sub heading underneath has been written in the same serif font to emphasize the serious issue. The subheading gives a basic over view of the situation this celebrity was in, therefore engaging the reader as this subheading sparks curiosity as to why she was in rehab. The use of the words ‘rollercoaster year’ have been chosen to emphasize that this article will be discussing the highs and lows of her life, which again makes the reader curious. The interviewers name has been written in bold as for her to gain recognition about this story. The text has been split up in to two columns which does not necessarily fit with the rule of thirds as there is only two columns. Although it could be seen that the sub images make up the third column. The reason the text could be in two columns is because this is an A5 magazine, and therefore by having only two columns make the text seem less crowded. The text begins with the convention of a drop cap, which has been placed there to grab the readers attention. The text has also been written in a serif font to show reliability of the text and to also show the importance of what has been written. At the end of the text is a black arrow to indicate that the article continues over the next few pages. This represents their magazine to be more mature, and also reflects the serious issue mentioned in the article. A thin black sans serif font has been used, as it could connote the impression that the celebrity is talking to the reader, therefore engaging them in the article. The white quotation marks have been used to make the quote stand out against the background to gain the reader’s interest. The page number and magazine name has been written in the bottom left. This has also been placed here in order for the photographer o gain recognition. In the top right hand page of the double page spread is the title ‘G Reality’. This is a design feature in the magazine which shows the different sections of the magazine, therefore making it easier for the reader to flick through to a page that will interest them. The ‘G’ is an abbreviation of the masthead, connoting a chatty atmosphere to the reader. The word reality also shows that the article here will be relatable to the reader, therefore engaging them into reading it. The overall colour scheme is black and white with the neutral colour of brown. This could connote how the celebrity has striped back to reveal all secrets. It could reflect the seriousness of this article. The reader here has been represented as curious and desire to know more information about the subject of rehab, The magazine could also be represented as considerate to serious issues which could occur within their reader’s/
