2. Young offenders are aged between 10 to 17
They are dealt with by the youth court which
is a branch of the Magistrates’ court
For exceptional cases involving offences like
rape, murder and manslaughter, a youth can
be tried in the Crown.
14 years and over can be sent to Crown
where for the same offence an adult could
expect at least 14 years
3. These are private cases, only those involved
in the case can be there
Press may attend but are not permitted to
publish name of offender.
There Magistrates’ who sit here must be
under 65 and have undergone special training
to deal with youth.
There needs to be one male and one female
magistrate sitting.
The proceedings are usually less formal and
parents of under 16 must be there.
