Career planning involves four main steps: self-assessment to gather information about one's interests, values, and skills; exploring occupational options; matching one's qualifications to potential careers; and developing an action plan. It is an important ongoing process that provides direction and makes clear one's goals. Career planning helps individuals become aware of their strengths, weaknesses, and the skills needed to achieve future goals. The process works best when goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound.
