Planning
What is Career?
• Its etymology comes from
the French word “carierre”
which means a road or a race
course, which in turn comes
from the Latin “cararia”
which refers to track for
wheeled vehicles.
What is
Career Planning?
• Career planning is a subset of
career management. Career is an
ongoing process and so it needs
to be assessed on continuous
basis. This process of re-
assessing individual learning
and development over a period
of time is called Career
Planning.
The Four Steps
of
Career Planning
Process
Self
Gather information about yourself
(self assesment)
• Interests, Values, Roles,
Skills/Aptitudes, Preferred
Environments, Developmental
Needs, Your realities
Options
• Explore the occupations in which
you are interested
• Get more specific information after
you narrow down your options
Match
During this process, you will:
• Identify possible occupations
• Choose both a short term and a
long term option
Action
You will develop the steps you need
to take in order to reach your goal,
for example:
• Investigating sources of additional
training and education, if needed
• Developing a job search strategy
• Writing your resume
• Preparing for job interview
Significance
of
Career Planning
• It is important to come up
with your career planning as
it gives you the much needed
direction and makes it clear
there where you see yourself
in future.
• It makes you aware of your
strength and weaknesses and
the skills and knowledge that
are required to achieve your
goals in future.
SMART way:
Specific (well-defined & detailed)
Measurable (can evaluate progress)
Attainable (within reach)
Realistic (practical)
Time-bound (within a time frame)
