Project: Facilitate building community relationships for sustainability and fundraising. Members: Alyssa Berg, Renee Kellogg, Brad Paepke, Annette Peterson Description: Youth ROCK is a faith based organization that offers area youth the opportunity to discover Rock County and involve themselves in a leadership development program while completing community service projects throughout the Rock County area. Our team is assisting in securing additional sponsors for supplies, projects, and funds. This will enable the organization to attain their current goal of doubling their numbers and their commitment to community services they are able to provide. In increasing the network of resources, we are also laying the groundwork for the long-term goal of an additional week of leadership development. This will include leadership exercises with community mentoring for past participants prior to the week of work. The sense of accomplishment, self-discovery, and comradery will live with these youth, and support Rock County, for a lifetime.

- The worlds needs can be overwhelming, as Adults we know this, imagine it from a child’s eyes. One area I struggled with this project is that my passion for community improvement & showing our youth areas of growth…is the lack of resources available to do. Last year Youth Rock received start up funds that are not available for Year 2. Wanting to double the community impact we know this will be a struggle. This is where Alyssa’s Blue took kicked in….

- Thank you, January 25th was the first planning meeting for Youth Rock 2015. This is where the financials from last year were reviewed and the new budget proposed with the amount of projects and participants double. Now this brought them to having a deficit with the previous years remaining funds. Now the question is where to get funds for this? One way is from the participant fees along with donations from UMC members but what if that is not enough.. This is where I came in and where I learned the most about myself when it came to my strengths and weaknesses. Most of my days were spent researching what felt like hundreds of grant opportunities which I would write down on a piece of paper to put into an email to Pastor Krysta. I would get distracted by something or someone which I would focus my attention on and when I came back I wouldn’t be able to find the links I made note of.
- So many days I was re-researching for grants I had already found. While researching the grants (which to me was fun because I knew it would help a cause I believed in) I was able to find the magic word in some of the ones that restricted religious organizations ability to apply, this word was UNLESS. This word opened the door for Youth Rock to be able to apply for the grant because this was followed by the phrase “it is providing a service to the community in whole”, the heart of Youth Rock. One of the focus’ with Youth Rock is for the Youth to learn leadership. One way of doing that is through fundraisers that the youth could choose.. I relayed that Mac’s Pizza Shack, Culvers, and Papa Johns offer fundraising opportunities that the youth can lead or participate in. I also relayed to them a large database of do it yourself fundraising ideas which would be fun and easy for youth to organize, lead, and participate in. An event like Youth Rock which features youth making a difference in their communities means there is a necessity for adult volunteers. 2014’s Youth Rock had a goal of 75 youth meaning you needed 13 adult volunteers to just over see a group of 5 youth. That didn’t include kitchen volunteers, job prospect seekers, or coordinators. This year the goal is to have 150 youth which doubles the volunteer needs so they could realistically need minimally 50 adults volunteers daily to aid the students with transportation, supervision, instruction, and meals. Where on earth would a person find that many adults that would want to hang out with teens all day and that would have technical skills One place is Youth Rocks own back door. From my own professional experience the United Methodist Church has an amazing group of people that what to make a difference for youth. I also referred them to RSVP which matches skilled seniors to volunteer opportunities.
