Purposes of research
Audience research 
Audience research - is a collection and analysis of information about 
the target audience of a specific media product, or sector of the 
industry. 
Audience research can be an effective way to collect qualitative 
research as you have the chance to profile the audience and get an in-depth 
and detailed understanding of their experiences, it is a 
successful way to communicate your product. 
While quantitative research, which is a type of research, engages with 
larger numbers that have a statistical relationship to a population or to 
large groups as a whole, qualitative research provides descriptions of the 
responses of particular audience members to particular media products, 
such as performances, at a certain time and place.
Audience research 
Audience research can be an effective way to collect qualitative 
research as you have the chance to profile the audience and get an in-depth 
and detailed understanding of their experiences. 
Audience research is about investigating statistical data about the size 
and profile of the audience members for a particular media product 
and how aware audience members are of a particular media product 
or service. 
Also what the members of the target audience think about certain 
products and services and their patterns of behaviour and the 
potential use of these products. Knowing what is important to your 
audience is also very important, there is a lot of competition in the 
media industry so your tactics of how to show your media product.
Market research 
Market research - is the collection and analysis of the market, which a 
certain product will be competing with other various products for a 
particular audience. 
The media market place is very competitive, so market research is very 
important. This is where the collection and analysis of information 
about the current market within a particular product will compete with 
other products for an audience and for revenue.
Market research 
Media producers will undertake market research into their 
targeted market, or they will hire another company to complete 
this research for them, this research is completed so that they 
can have an outlook into what the current market looks like, who 
else that they are competing with and what the products of 
competition are. 
The most common point of interest is economic factors in the 
particular market and also what potential of income is available.
Production research 
Production research – is the collection and analysis of data and 
information about a specific media product, this includes the content 
and production. 
Production research is used to gather certain material to create a new 
product and provide the content that is needed for 
creation/development of this product. 
Also it is needed to take into consideration whether the correct 
personnel available to create this product and to make sure that all 
equipment and production locations are also available. 
Research needs to be thorough, so that when the planning is made the 
whole outlook of the production should run smoothly, this also 
includes the post-production stages.
Production research 
When production research is being completed, the viability of the 
product needs to also be taken into consideration.
