3. Background About World Expo
2020 in UAE
World Expo is an event every 5 Years
for ‘a global community to share
innovations and make progress on
issues of international importance in
global economy, sustainable
development and improved quality
of life for the worlds population’
World expo 2020 Theme
‘connecting minds, creating the
future’

4. Create an innovate
idea/product that will be able
to have a Global Impact in
‘connecting minds, creating
the future’ in either of the sub
themes.
The sub themes are:
1. Sustainability- lasting
sources of energy and
water
2. Mobility- Smart systems of
logistics and transportation
3. Opportunity- new paths to
economic development
Challenge
2
5. Research into the main Global
issues within the sub themes
1. Sustainability- lasting sources of water and
energy
Three main Global issues in Sustainability:
1. Plastic water bottles contain harmful
chemical that could seep into drinking water
if old or exposed to heat. They still occupy
space in landfills even when recycled which
happens to be growing issue in capitals
worldwide such as Hong Kong.Bottled water
also has a reputation for being ‘cleaner’ than
filtered tap water”-Natural Resources Defense
Council
2. Climate framework has been featuring in the
top right quadrant of the global Issues
Monitor since it was first introduced in 2009.
3. Permaculture problem as its trying to tactic
the care, earth care, people care and fair
share
3
6. 1. Urban expansion and high dependence on the car and truck
have led to congestion in cities and towns across Europe.
Congestion and the accompanying issues of road safety and
environmental pollution.
2. Mobility-smart systems of logistics and transportation
2. Car dependency has grown in an ageing population, demands
for new
and flexible lifestyles, Cities are faced with finding new transport
solutions
for rapid and easy movement of people. Furthermore, new
technologies
create high expectations for smart mobility options, such as real-
time traffic information for travellers, drivers, fleet operators and
network managers.
Two main Global issues in Mobility:

issues within the sub themes

7. Research into Current Global issues
with the sub themes
3. Opportunity- new paths to economic
development
Two main Global issues in Opportunity:
1. In a world of close to 9 billion people expected by
2030 – including 3 billion new middle-class consumers –
the challenges of expanding resource supply to meet
future demand are unprecedented.
2. Our cities are increasingly centers of business and
innovation and are home to the majority of the
global population. Cities are facing accelerated
migration, unprecedented demographic changes,
economic boom and bust and shifting lifestyle
5
8. Conclusion of Research
Researching the three different issues, it
seems that outlined as the most important
global issues is water and climate
change.
Cosmopolitan cities are wasting plastic
bottles which produces harmful toxins in
the air.
As technology is advancing we need to
develop permaculture new system that will
help encourage people to stop wasting
water.
6
10. A vending machine with a
new principle
The vending machine will
come in hand with a high
quality reusable water
bottle, a drinking water tap
and an interactive e-ink
display incorporating
statistical tracking and
social sharing in hopes of
incentivizing the use of
these bottles and instilling a
sense of environmental
responsibility
The Solution8
11. The concept of the vending
machine
The design is to create an ecologically friendly
no waste product that builds a highly
established product relationship with the
consumer.
to improve the consumer’s experience with
the machine, we would have an interactive
user interface that would show the consumer
how much water they have saved, what the
water they have saved could now be used for,
how much they have saved.
9
12. The concept of the bottle
The bottle, which is already designed to be compatible and
reused with the vending machine would be marked in
accordance to a set amount of times it has been used, e.g.
one mark per every litre of water refilled in the machine. The
bottle will also be issued with ink embossed QR code that will
allow the consumer to access the exact amount of water
they have saved
An important fact found upon our research was that filtered
tap water does not require any refilling of selling units. With
this in mind, we realized one problem that emerged with the
concept of our design: ‘How do we provide the low eco-
impact and longer lasting bottles in an efficient way?’
10
13. The benefits
1. Not only does it highlight the economical,
ecological, social and personal benefits their water
consumption has made, following through with the
three core facets of Permaculture design: earth
care, people care and fair share.
2. As it is crucial for the product to obtain a set yield in
order to sustain its required needs, pricing for the
vending machine would be low, in turn making the
demand for the product –cheap, clean and
accessible water, high. These costs would also
include profits made from the purchase of the
separate bottle, an investment that is both personal
and durable in the long term, as the bottle only
needs to be bought once. With the use and reuse of
the valuables of our renewable resources and
services, we will allow the product and the
consumer to integrate rather than segregate with
each other, creating a brand awareness and
trust that will entice the consumer to reuse the
vending machine in the future.
11
14. Strategy to Engage with consumer
through social media
• Personalized QR code, which may result in getting
the product trending on social media platforms
such as Twitter. Alternative ways of making the
product well known is through the use of hash tags,
YouTube bloggers reviewing the machine, charities
sponsoring and Instagram, as the main focus to
engage the audience and get them ‘wanting’ to
help.
• The use of colour will be a big impact on our
message, as we want to reaffirm the aspects we
are using in Permaculture Design, with aspects that
are desirable in a beverage brand. Clear, blue,
green colours subliminally suggest health, fitness
and eco-friendly products. This is the direction the
product and vending machine design that we are
planning to do
12
15. Comparing Cost and
expenses
The cost for each vending machine will be the electricity required to power
the mechanisms and e-ink display. The water cost will be the standard rate
given by the pipeline. Plumbers and electricians for installation of each
machine and maintenance will be required. The manufacturing costs will be
highly dependent on the final design, however the priority is to produce a low
cost and functional design. In the long term, the costs saved by the consumer
as well as the cost saved by the suppliers will create rising savings as well as
profit and revenue. This will be in keeping to the principles of Permaculture
Design, in accordance of obtaining a sustainable yield with the help of the
constant self-regulation of our product. This will effectively create small slow
solutions, both ecologically and financially that have a long-term impact.
The following chart is based on predictions of revenue harboured on both
vending machines.
13
16. Challenges from client and how
I overcome them
Expo 2020 had originally wanted the product to
be fitted with access to social media; however,
we soon felt that it over complicated the
simplicity of the design.
So to come to a median we thought a good
idea would be to promote the idea on social
media platforms on the global social scale.
14
17. Conclusion
By using the disciplines focused on Permaculture Design, we have
created the basis of a product that embodies the fundamental
principles of earth care, people care and fair share. The product is
a simple, clean-cut and environmentally fresh design that
tackles modern global issues such as recycling and energy waste.
Consequently, the product creates a trust worthy consumer-to-
product relationship through the basis of self-regulation, a result that
comes from our strict observance and interaction with the
consumer.
The positive benefits of introducing these new water vending
machines to all stakeholders involved. Providing a cheap source
of drinking water and are also able feel good about being
environmentally conscious. Expo 2020 Dubai can promote how
sustainable and forward thinking they as a country. We hope that
this unique machine will also attract attention from the public and
create awareness to the problem it is trying to tackle and
eventually a new practice can be permeated into the global
mentality.
