These are large, granular lymphoid-like cells with important functions in innate immunity. They lack antigen-specific receptors but can recognize virus-infected cells.

Figure 2-12 Each of the 10 known TLRs recognize one or more microbial molecular patterns, mostly by direct interaction with molecules on the pathogen surface. These patterns are not found in normal vertebrates. As there are only 10 TLR genes, they have limited specificity, unlike receptors from the adaptive immune system. TLRs recognize a broad range of pathogenic microorganisms.
