7. Class L: Analysis
Pomperaug, a state semifinalist last year, is seeded second, but coming off a
stinging loss to Notre Dame-Fairfield in the SWC semifinals.
The Panthers are part of a loaded bracket led by defending champion and top
seed Bacon Academy, which was upset by Class LL Norwich Free Academy in
the ECC championship game, but will be a tough out.
There are so many good teams in this field that NVL champion Torrington is
seeded ninth. The Raiders open with a familiar foe, Crosby. A win there matches
them against a tough Ledyard team that took Bacon to overtime in the ECC
quarters. After that, Torrington would get a taste of Bacon itself.
Watertown, seeded No. 4, has a tough draw, too. After opening with
Woodstock Academy, the Indians most likely have No. 13 Northwest Catholic
waiting in the next round. No. 5 Wilton, the top regular-season team in the
FCIAC, looms in the quarterfinals. Oh, yeah, there's also Class L runner-up
Tolland in this part of the bracket.
The path isn't easy for Pomperaug, either. After a first-round bye, the Panthers
see either Hand, of the tough SCC, or Kennedy in the second round. No. 7 Avon,
tops in the NCCC in the regular season, awaits after that, and third seed Berlin,
ranked No. 8 in the state and the best regular-season team in the CCC, tops the
lower half of the bracket.

10. Class M: Analysis
There are coaches in the Berkshire League who think their conference is
superior this year to the Naugatuck Valley League. One first-round matchup
and one likely second-round matchup ought to provide some clues as to
whether they're right.
No. 4 Nonnewaug hosts No. 29 Sacred Heart on Tuesday night. The Chiefs
enter the game off a lackluster outing against Lewis Mills in the BL
tournament, but they already own the scalp of one NVL team, having
dominated St. Paul in a nonleague regular season game.
Sacred Heart, beset by injuries all season, barely snuck into the tournament,
but does have its best player, Dionne Parker, back and shouldn't be overlooked.
Whichever team wins will likely face a red-hot Ellington team, the NCCC
tournament champion, in the next round.
Meanwhile, No. 6 Lewis Mills, a BL runner-up, and No. 11 Ansonia, an
NVL semifinalist, ought to meet in the second round in Burlington, if form
holds. It will be an intriguing matchup of the Spartans' size inside vs. the
Chargers' athletic guards.
Top seed Cromwell is the lone remaining unbeaten team in the state.

13. Class S: Analysis
It's a good to be the Thomaston girls basketball team.
The Golden Bears are Berkshire League champions for the
third time in four years, laid waste to everyone at the BL
tournament and are among the top seeds in the Class S state
tournament that opens tonight.
Best of all: As Thomaston scans its bracket, there are no
Shoreline Conference teams standing in the way of the
state championship game at Mohegan Sun Arena. Shoreline
teams, after all, have long been the Bears' bugaboo.
Worst of all: If the Bears do make it to the Sun, they will
most likely run into Capital Prep, the No. 1-ranked team in
the state, and dominating center Kiah Gillespie. Capital
Prep, the No. 1 seed in Class S, obliterated No. 2 seed
Cheney Tech, 81-38, while winning the CSC for the sixth
straight year. Gillespie had 25 points and 16 rebounds.
Of course, No. 3 Thomaston, which gets a first-round
bye, has some challenges before it can worry about Capital
Prep, the biggest one being No. 6 Somers of the always
tough NCCC in the quarterfinals.
