4. What IS a debate? Two opposing teams use structured, formal arguments on a given topic. An adjudicator decides which team has developed their argument most convincingly. Think of it like a court room! Debating teams = lawyers Adjudicator = judge

5. Opposing Teams? Affirmative: Yes! Negative: No! The affirmative team opens the debate, and the negative team closes the debate. Each team has 4 team members: 3 speakers and 1 writer.

6. Structured, Formal Arguments? Team Line: Sums up your case. Each team member must relate their arguments to the team line. Arguments: Support your team line Statement Reason Evidence Thinking on your feet: Rebuttal: Trying to undermine the opposing team’s argument. NOTE that this is done by talking about their argument NOT the actual speaker.

7. Research Question: Does every speaker rebut, argue and use the team line? Each speaker has a different role and a different order or structure of argument.Your job to find out what this is! Hint: not every speaker will rebut AND put forward arguments, but every speaker uses the team line.
