Reduce noise recording

  1. 1. How to reduce unwanted electrical andacoustical noise when recordingLuciano de OliveiraIntroduction to Music ProductionLesson week 4
  2. 2. Luciano de Oliveira - Brazilian, living in Porto AlegreRS (South) - Favorite out of work activities: - read books and watch movies. - Travel - Play bass-guitar - Receive friends at home - Play Squash
  3. 3. Introduction▪ Even in a quiet recording room will have some kind of noise – Air conditioning – Computer fan – Own Gears – Cables▪ When recording we try to avoid basic two type of noise: – Acoustic noise – Electrical noise▪ On next slides we will cover some strategies to avoid this kind of noises
  4. 4. Reducing acoustic noise▪ Listen carefully to the “silence” or “room tone” to identify noise – When you be quiet enough will start notice this different noises▪ Move away from noisy sources – Fans – Windows – Computers Remember before record▪ Create an isolated space fro recording take a time and listen to acoustic noises into▪ Turn off noisy sources recording room – A/C – Fans – Heating – TV – Not used appliances
  5. 5. Reducing electrical noise▪ Every gear have some sort of electrical noise – Take attention to high quality gears that have reduced electrical noise – Check self noise specifications on gear manual▪ Use few pieces of gear▪ Use shorter cables▪ Use balanced cables (XLR / TRS) – Specified to reduce or isolate signal from noise▪ Turn off appliances and dimmers – Dimmer is a great noise generator – Actual systems use AC (alternate current) with 50-60 Hz that’s a wave form that generate a hamm▪ Try to use high quality gear – Plastic device tend to have more noise
  6. 6. Reducing electrical noise▪ Avoid unnecessary Gain on input – Boost level electrically as little as possible – Move mic closer to source instead of increase gain – Choose directional microphone to isolate source not getting unnecessary sound Less noise on recording is better than try to reduce noise on mixing step
