shirt (which may be long - or short-sleeved)
and shoes.
Most cricket players wear spiked shoes
for better grip on the field.
In games with a traditional red ball,
outfits must always be white or off-

games with white balls.

No other player is allowed to wear protective equipment in the field
unless they are close to the batsmen, in which case they get to wear a

webbed gloves, shin guards and a
helmet.
6. Things You Need to Play
To play cricket, you need the following things:
six
stumps
four bails
two
cricket
bats
a ball
7. What Does a Cricket Ground Look Like?
To play cricket, you need the following things:
Cricket is played on a large, oval-shaped field.
The field has a rectangular strip in the centre,
which is called the pitch.
A boundary line should be clearly marked all
around the outside edge of the field.
A pitch is when the bowler delivers the ball to the
other team's batsman.
9. Positions in Cricket
To play cricket, you need the following things:
The person who bowls the ball is the bowler.
The batsman who is facing the bowler is called the striker.
The other batsman, who stands near the bowler at the far side of the
pitch from the striker, is called the non-striker.
Finally, the fielding team member who stands behind the wickets at the
striker's end of the field is called the wicketkeeper.
The other members of the fielding team are called fielders.
11. How to Play Cricket
A match is played between two teams consisting of eleven players.
One team fields (catches the ball) while the other team bats (hits the ball).
The fielding team try to get the batsmen out whilst the batting team
tries to score as many runs as they can without getting out.
The bowler will bowl ‘an over.’ One over consists of six balls. Off each
delivery, a batsmen can either not score, or score 1 through to 6.
If a ball is hit to the boundary along the ground - it is worth four runs.
If a ball is hit over the boundary - it is worth six runs.
Each batting team is allowed to lose 10 wickets before they must switch
around and be the bowling team.
The object of the game is to score more runs than the opposing team.
12. Getting the Batsman “Out”
The aim of the bowler is to take the batsman out. There are many ways
a batsman can be out:
• The batsman hits the ball but one of the fielders catches the ball in
the air before it hits the ground.
• The batsman is out bowled if a delivery hits the stumps and dislodges
a bail.
• The batsman will be dismissed leg before wicket (lbw) if the ball hits
the batsman in line with the stumps behind him, and the umpire
believes that the ball would go on to hit the stumps.
• If the batsman accidentally hits the wickets behind him, he is out.
13. The Ashes
The Ashes is a test cricket series played between England and Australia.
The Ashes is a small urn, for which both teams compete. The original
Ashes urn is kept in the MCC Museum at Lord's Cricket Ground, London.
Nowadays the teams compete for a replica urn.
