3. The Future of Indonesia
Imagine the possibilities of a nationwide sustainable energy
infrastructure. Indonesia would become a model for the
world that embraces environmental education, clean
energy technologies, and has abundant energy. New
businesses and jobs would be created. Pollution is reduced
and the quality of living significantly improved. Imagine the
impact of such a plan. It is possible.

5. Indonesia’s Current Crisis
Almost 35% of Indonesia’s population, or over 84
million people, lacks access to electricity
Current electrical infrastructure needs dramatic
improvement to handle future needs
Indonesia is a net-importer of fossil fuel
Unfavorable energy security position
Large government subsidies erode incentive to
change
Deforestation and fossil fuel dependence are
cause for environmental concern
Indonesia is currently the world's third-largest
greenhouse-gas emitter

7. Plan Objectives
Contribute to the President’s goal of 90%
electrification by 2020
Pursue the National Goal of 15% renewable
energy generating capacity by 2025
Utilize Indonesia’s precious natural resources
in a sustainable and environmentally
responsible fashion
Stimulate the economy through business
creation, job training, infrastructure, and
education

8. Renewable Energy Potential
Multiple renewable energy sources exist in
abundance
Hydropower, Geothermal, Biomass/Biogas, Solar,
Wind, plus agricultural and industrial
cogeneration
Much of the current potential is undeveloped,
between 95% - 99%
Renewable energy resources exist in rural
areas were they are most needed
Local development can power smaller areas
without dependence on the national network

18. Hydro Electric
• PLN has identified 96 potential
hydroelectric power sites in Indonesia
• 60% of the sites would be developed
by the PLN, while the remaining would
be offered to independent power
producers
• The Energy and Mineral Resources
Ministry says Indonesia has an overall
capacity of 75,670 MW of hydropower
• Currently hydropower accounts for
only 5,705 MW
• PLN is obliged to buy power from any
renewable energy generators (hydro,
solar, geothermal, biomass). This
means any hydropower scheme Powerpoint Templates
development is welcomed. Page 18

24. What is Green Infrastructure?
Green building or infrastructure uses the features of
nature, new technologies and sustainable materials to
build cost-neutral or cost-saving eco-friendly structures.
Buildings use efficient construction methods/materials,
incorporate recycling, green transportation methods,
energy and water efficiency, improved air quality, and
profitability.
Older buildings can be retrofitted to significantly reduce
operating costs and carbon emissions.
Green building provide a more productive and healthy
environment for occupants.

27. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a United States
based green building certification program. LEED uses third-party verification
that a building, home or community was designed and built using strategies
aimed at achieving the highest performance standards in sustainable site
development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor
environmental quality.

36. The World Bank in Indonesia
• Portfolio of 77 active projects as of September 201
• Total commitments were worth US$6.977 billion for roads, energy, education, health,
irrigation and rural development.
• The World Bank also supervises another 11 projects financed out of the Aceh and
Nias, and the Java Multi-Donor Trust Funds.
• Through the Geothermal Clean Energy Investment Project, Indonesia will scale up
power generation using its vast geothermal resources - the largest in the world. The
project sets the goal to increase 4,000 Megawatts of geothermal power, which is
equivalent to a 40 percent increase of global geothermal power generation.

38. Potential Impact
Deliver reliable electricity to
nearly 84 million Indonesians
If renewable energy
resources are developed at
33% of their potential, the
result is over 50 GW of power
Jobs would be created in the
development, distribution,
support, and maintenance of
the resources
Education, and specialized
skills training would be
available to thousands of
people
