New Years wish for LTLS libraries.

10 WISHES FOR LIBRARY
SERVICE IN LTLS FOR 2008

That LTLS would get an increase in
state funding in order to add more
delivery service and enhance
consulting.

By December 31, 2008 that all LTLS
member libraries would have an
active Web Site.

That LTLS could get sufﬁcient grant
funds to get more libraries
automated with LINC.

That patron-initiated ILL using OCLC
would be the standard operating
practice for all libraries.

That all LTLS libraries would become
members and participate in Polytalk.

That every staff member of LTLS and
LTLS member libraries could attend
at least 10 hours of education or
training in 2008.

That library construction could be
designed and implemented as Green
Construction.

That all LTLS libraries would offer
customers public computer access
and have a minimum of one T-1
dedicated to library service.

That library funding would at a
minimum keep up with inﬂation.

That LTLS would host a technology
conference that was even more
successful than the conference held
in September 2007.

As libraries increasingly use digital infrastructure to provide access to content and resources, there are more and more opportunities for collaboration around the tools and services that they use to meet their users’ needs. To this end, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is making substantial investments in developing collaborative and sustainable technical and social digital infrastructure for libraries through the National Digital Platform initiative. In this talk, you will learn about a series of digital tools, services, training opportunities and resources IMLS is funding through the National Leadership Grants for Libraries Program and the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program. The presentation will focus on ongoing projects and efforts that you and your library can get involved in and make direct use of. It will also provide insight into how you could develop competitive proposals for projects that could be funded through this national effort.

I dag holder de nordiske biblioteksforeninger fælles møde i Oslo. Vores tema er de fælles udfordringer bibliotekerne har i forhold til at udlåne ebøger, hvor copyrightlovgivningen ikke giver bibliotekerne de undtagelser der skal til for at kunne købe og udlåne dem. I Danmark har vi skabt og forhandles os frem til forskellige forretningsmodeller i eReolen.dk Lige nu er alle forlag med under forskellige forretningsmodeller og det betyder at bibliotekerne i Danmark som det eneste land i verden kan stille alle danske ebøger til rådighed for borgerne. Det fantastisk og det er vi naturligvis stolte af, omend det er en dyr model som ikke er holdbar hvis flertallet begynder at låne e-bøger frem for de fysiske. I forhold til de fysiske bøger har bibliotekerne nemlig de nødvendige undtagelser i ophavsretlovgivning til at købe og udlåne alle de bøger de vil. Det afspejler sig naturligt på prisen, da de så kan indkøbe på markedsvilkår. Det kan bibliotelerne ikke hvad angår ebøger, hvor de så skal forhandle sig frem til en pris og betingelse hos dem der har ophavsretten, typisk forlaget. Det er en sådan forhandlingsløsning vi i et nationalt fælleskab har lavet i Danmark. Det og meget andet skal vi drøfte i dag for vi tror på at vi i internationale fællesskaber kan opnår endnu bedre betingelser for bibliotekerne og i sidste ende for borgerne. Det er jo dem vi er der for. Det er dybest set også derfor vi har skabt de såkaldt åbne biblioteker, hvis åbningstid er langt længere end de timer hvor der er personale. På nuværende tidspunkt har vi over 250, hvilket også er noget helt særligt Dansk. Ud over alt det skal vi fra Danmarks Biblioteksforening også fortælle om os selv, vi er nemlig også helt særlige fordi vi har skabt en organisation, hvor der både er politikere og fagfolk i samme forening. www.biblioteksdebat.dk

This session will contextualise the objectives of the plan, give an update on progress, and look ahead to the opportunities that may be afforded if a more open bibliographic data ecosystem can be realised that empowers novel research, learning and teaching. A key part of the session will report on the outcome of a negotiation between Jisc and OCLC to facilitate a national WorldCat licence.

Today I make a presentation on the Pre-conference for Decision Makers at the IFLA President´s Meeting 2014 in Helsinki. The title is "Bringing Libraries on the agenda - a political Question" It's a introduction to The Danish Library Association and its unique organizational structure that involves both politicians and professionals. In the Danish Library Association we represent one of the more radical solutions to achieving this political approach to working for libraries: We have brought the political decision-makers and the library professionals together in the same association. The President is always politicians and local politicians always constitute the majority.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
