Princess Jahan's Tuition Classes, a story for entertainment
Question 1 part 2
1. Throughout the trailer we developed a clear gender divide between the
characters. The girls were stereotypical „plastics‟ who wore large
amounts of make-up, fur and expensive clothes. The males are
stereotypical masculine men, with the exception of Fred (Dan), who go
to the gym and flirt with girls. However, we challenged these
conventions throughout the trailer. One example being when Fred was
dressed in a girls „Pauls Boutique‟ leopard print hooded top, this
wouldn‟t normally be seen as something one of the characters from
TOWIE would wear, it would normally be associated with a young
“chavvy” girl and that‟s why we decided to incorporate it into our trailer,
to make the character of Fred seem hilarious.
2. We used similar shots the original show
so that the two would relate in another
way and to give some familiarity to the
audience who have already seen TOWIE.
These shots also show the vanity of the
characters, most of the trailer is of the
characters getting ready and grooming
themselves ready to present themselves.
3. Throughout our trailer we played with the metrosexual aspect of
the male characters in TOWIE by emphasising the tanning and
hair care by over applying the products which it sometimes
seems like the characters of TOWIE often do. We also
exaggerated the metrosexual aspect of the clothing by wearing
as many “branded” clothes as possible, which seemed to make
the trailer even more tacky and therefore even funnier.
Metro Sexual – a man who spends a lot of time and
money on shopping for his appearance. Debate
surrounds the term's use as a theoretical signifier of
sex deconstruction and its associations with
consumerism.
4. We followed the regular conventions of the show to create similar shot types. These
two shots show the mise en scene of each room, the original show, shows white
walls with clothes on display, the clothes are hung up and look very posh and
expensive, once again the character is applying make-up and grooming herself. We
re-created this scene but in our shot the room is very cluttered and instead of
glamorous white walls with expensive dresses hung up, it has bright pink walls and
lots of clutter with clothes thrown on the floor etc. This challenges the conventions
of the show but the shot as a whole changes the conventions, this means it follows
the regular conventions but some factors are changed to create contrast.
5. Dan and Mark are sat in exactly the same pose and they‟re both in
cars but Mark is sat in an expensive convertible car where as Dan is in
a small hatchback that later on in the trailer is bought for £25. This is
another example of us changing the conventions of The Only Way is
Essex
6. We chose “I‟m Sexy and I Know It” by LMFAO for the backing song of our
trailer. We chose this song as it was very popular at the time and
everybody knew about it, it also shows the vanity of the characters in the
show, as the name suggests.
