3. Non- sporing anaerobes
GNC GPC GPB GNB
Veillonella
Non-pathogenic
Peptococcus niger: GPC
without chains, pyogenic
infections, puerperal infec.
Sepsis, UTI
Peptostrptococcus: GPC in chains,
commonest an. Cocci isolated. P.
anaerobius – Puerperal infec., & P.
magnus- wound infections
Eubacterium
Lactobacillus
Bifidobacterium
Propionibacterium
Actinomyces
Mobiluncus
Bacteroides
Prevotella
Porphyromonas
Fusobacterium
Leptotrichia
BELPAM
Fur BP - Lasix
4. Anaerobic Gram Positive Bacilli
• Eubacterium: Strict anaerobes, E. brachy,
E. nodatum – periodontitis
• Lacobacilli: carbs - ↑↑↑ Lactic acid, ↓ pH
• Biopolar, barred staining
• L. acidophilus – biotin, B12, Vit K – Intestines
• Dental caries – mineral in dentin & enamel is
dissolved by acid from dietary carbs
• Various spp. In vagina = Doderlein’s bacilli - ↓↓
pH in adult vagina
5. • Propionibacterium: a/k/a anaerobic
diptheroids
• P. acnes - ? Acne
• Infections – endocarditis, abscess, implanted
prosthesis
• Mobiluncus: motile, curved, along with G.
vaginalis = bacterial vaginitis
• Actinomyces: another class
6. Anaerobic GNB
• Bacteroides: Bacilli with rounded ends, strict
anaerobes
• Normal stool = 105/gram
• Bacteroides fragilis – Large intestine
• Prevotella melaninogenica: not melanin,
black/ brown colonies – haemin degradation
product, under UV rays – Red fluorescence
7. • Porphyromonas gingivalis: peridontal diseases
• P. endodontalis: dental root canal infection
• Fusobacterium: fusiform shape, F. nucleatum
is m/c.
• Head, neck, dental, periodontal & cerebral
abscess
8. • Leptotrichia buccalis: long, straight or curved,
NM, previously k/a Fusobacterium fusiforme,
• Along with B. vincentii = ulcerative gingivitis,
Vincent’s angina
9. Anaerobic infections
• Endogenous , trauma, DM, malignancy or
prolonged use of antibiotics
• Usually polymicrobial infections
• Pus: putrid, nauseating odor, dark color
• Lab diagnosis = difficult to interpret as these
are also normal flora
10. Lab diagnosis
• Sample: avoid contact with air, air-tight
containers or Stuart’s medium
• Gram stain: very useful, mixed organisms and
pus cells ++++
• Suggestive features of anaerobic infection:
sterile pus, deep abscess, red fluorescence
and not responding to conventional AMAa
11. Culture
• Fresh BA + neomycin + yeast extract + haemin
+ Vit. K
• Anaerobic jar
• Gas packs
• CMB
• Thioglycollate broth
• PRAS : pre reduced anaerobically sterilized
media
