Presented in Bangalore CNCF Meetup - Summary & Highlights of KubeCon + CloudNativeCon 2019 - Barcelona & Shanghai. Several resource links are provided for further exploration of both the events.
4. KubeCon 2019 Barcelona Highlights
▪ Europe conferences are getting better - 6000 attended
▪ CKA(Certified Kubernetes Administrator) valid for 3 years
▪ Harbor 1.8 – Extension on top of Docker Registry
▪ Intuit Wins CNCF End user award
▪ Kong project, a cloud native, fast, scalable and distributed micro service abstraction layer; Gold member
▪ Foundation has more than 400 members
▪ K8s 5th Birthday celebrated
▪ Microsoft: Service Mesh Interface(SMI) Specifications, Visual Studio Code Kubernetes extension 1.0 –
Production management of Kubernetes, Helm 3 alpha, Virtual Kubelet 1.0
▪ Google: Enhancements to GKE, Stackdriver Kubernetes Engine Monitoring
Takeaway from `The News Stack` Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2H_Ej3OCK5k
SMI may be for large scaling project not otherwise - k8s alone can do; Security conversations – no threat model
is done for k8s; serverless can be better need not over provision as in today; Cisco Network Service Mesh is
interesting; CNCF has competing projects and it is good like Containerd vs CRI-O; k8s is becoming more open
than Google stuff; k8s is a great agile model developed; Zero trust needs to be there – least privileges; Security
tools need to be used that k8s is too complex; Storage, stateful are other topics to be handled; Consolidation
taking place like OpenTracing; Knative was not a big news this time; Anthos cloud native umbrella is interesting;
CloudForms - interoperability in clouds does not exists today; Progress in last 6 months was less; Establish
companies need to make things easier to use; CD is still hard to do. Complexity is increased in last year but not
much breakthrough; Enterprise use case is getting better; k8s going Openstack way on number of vendors; k8s
service providers are not that much; AWS + IBM models open source cultures are changing; CD foundation
could be part of Open Infra foundation; Vendors need to teach people how to do CICD; VMWare is doing good –
leading in several SIGs; Don’t bet against AWS – they will win – its like Amazon River flowing as it takes
everything and deliver everything!
