To raise the education and skills levels of students by delivering a curriculum which gives them life and social skills, sets stretching and challenging targets, and better prepares them for a fast-changing world. The new curriculum prioritises core skills —  English Mathematics  ICT It also focuses on teamwork and other personal skills, preparing young people for study at a higher level or for employment. What is the idea behind the 14-19 curriculum? Raised minimum age for leaving school to 18 Reducing assessments at A-levels New extended project qualification More focus on for science, technology, engineering and maths courses Expanding apprenticeship opportunities More subjects being added for the Diploma such as Humanities and Social sciences, Science and Languages and International Communication for September 2011 14-19 Reform What exactly is changing? The goal is, by 2020, for 90% of young people to achieve Level 2 (5 A* to C GCSEs equivalent) by the age of 19, and 75% to achieve level 3 qualifications by that age. The aims of the 14-19 agenda are to make reforms in three main areas: ,[object Object]

The Diploma is a new qualification for 14 – 19 year olds  You can pick from 14 Diploma subjects now  You will learn about an area of work you're interested in  Through a mix of class work and hands on experience  You can also choose subject options that you want to do  This could be to do with a hobby, a career or study you want to get into  And still take compulsory subjects like English, maths and ICT  The Diploma The Facts
Some schools and colleges are teaching Diploma courses now. Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)
Functional skills in Math’s, English and IT
Additional and Specialist learningSpecialised IT Diploma “Developed in partnership with employers and universities, each Diploma blends general education and applied learning to provide a motivating and challenging programme of study”  e-skills UK, 2007 .
The diploma requires the learning style of Applied Learning. This consists a balance of practical skill development and knowledge. A requirement of teaching the IT Diploma is Experiential Learning  (see diagram on right).   This would apply where learners are performing a practical activity applying their knowledge and skills, they are essentially behaving in the required applied nature of the Diploma. Then reviewing that learning and considering how improvements can be made and  implemented. The above constitutes as Experiential Learning. IT Diploma Learning  Techniques of Applied Learning

To raise the education and skills levels of students by delivering a curriculum which gives them life and social skills, sets stretching and challenging targets, and better prepares them for a fast-changing world. The new curriculum prioritises core skills — English Mathematics ICT It also focuses on teamwork and other personal skills, preparing young people for study at a higher level or for employment.   • 14. Additional and Specialist learningSpecialised IT Diploma “Developed in partnership with employers and universities, each Diploma blends general education and applied learning to provide a motivating and challenging programme of study” e-skills UK, 2007 .
  • 15. The diploma requires the learning style of Applied Learning. This consists a balance of practical skill development and knowledge. A requirement of teaching the IT Diploma is Experiential Learning (see diagram on right). This would apply where learners are performing a practical activity applying their knowledge and skills, they are essentially behaving in the required applied nature of the Diploma. The Government's aim is for every child, whatever their background or their circumstances, to have the support they need to: be healthy stay safe enjoy and achieve make a positive contribution achieve economic well-being. The goal is, by 2020, for 90% of young people to achieve Level 2 (5 A* to C GCSEs equivalent) by the age of 19, and 75% to achieve level 3 qualifications by that age.

Minister plays down 40% departmental cuts planning (BBC News – 04/07/10) Anticipating there is more loss of jobs in the private and public sector it is imperative that we attract students to consider higher learning and stay on at school longer. Inspection and diploma rules loosened for colleges (BBC News – 24/06/10 Schools minister Nick Gibb also said he was stopping the development of the extended diploma.   3. Five major routes which can help shape a brighter future:1 – The Diploma2 – GCSE/A-level3 – Apprenticeships4 – The Foundation Learning Tier5 – Employment with accredited training

GCSE/A-Level- A* - inspire students to excel further and teacher need to encourage and motivate this- Coursework – some students prefer this method of learning, teachers can have more time for lesson planningApprenticeships- Helps students who are Not in Employment Education or Training(NEET) to earn whilst getting trainedSome students are more practical and would prefer this form of learning (kinesthetic) and this would help them choose a career path by gaining first hand experience.Diploma- Students have more choice with courses and paths of learning but could be daunting whilst choosing- Teacher have more variation then conventional learning style leading to satisfaction but would also require time to execute good lesson plansFoundation Learning Tier- Manageable work load as split to specific subjects and will allow students to increase opportunities for those working at entry level and level 1 (below GCSE A-C) with personalised learning
