Social media circa 2007 vs. now--people thought it was a fad and would just fade away. Professionals thought it was just for kids and didn’t see value in using social media platforms for anything more than sharing “what they ate for lunch” on Twitter or connecting with friends on Facebook. Fast forward to today and social media is as prevalent as mainstream media, and often the two are intermingled--TV programs have embraced “second screen” activities like interactive chats, displaying user-generated content on-screen in real time; journalists encourage readers and listeners to connect with them on Twitter or Instagram--and, of course, politicans have adopted new media platforms as platforms of choice to connect with citizens of all ages.
The power of social media is that it allows anyone to become a broadcaster, a publisher, a photographer, a thought leader--for better or for worse. :) I’m not going to talk politics but it’s hard to ignore the power and utility of social media platforms when the President of the United States uses Facebook Live to break major announcements and turns to Twitter on almost a daily basis to share unfettered thoughts with the world. I’ll digress from that topic but wanted to just spend a few minutes sharing some recent statistics about social media--who’s using social media platforms, what platforms they’re using and what they’re using them for. Then Ali will focus on best practices when using new media platforms to promote psychology as well as ethical considerations when using new media.
Current statistics of worldwide social media platform use show that 2.51 billion people around the globe use social media sites (source: https://www.statista.com/statistics/278414/number-of-worldwide-social-network-users/)
Social networking is one of the most popular online activities, with U.S. users spending more than 216 minutes a week on social media via smartphone, 53 weekly minutes via PC, and 50 minutes per week on social networks via tablet devices.
