Sudarshan Pattnaik was born in 1977 in a poor family in Puri, India and dropped out of school. He developed a passion for sand sculpture as a child while playing at the beach. Though he had to work to support his family from a young age, he continued practicing his art form. His talent was discovered and he began participating in national and international competitions, winning many awards. Some of his major achievements include receiving the Padma Shri award from the Indian government in 2014, setting a Guinness World Record for the world's tallest sand castle, and representing India in over 50 international sand sculpture events.
