Modelling urban climate
Natalie Theeuwes, Gert-Jan Steeneveld,
Bert van Hove , Bert Holtslag
2. Activities CESAR project 2
Assessment model performance for the Randstad;
• derivation of geometrical and thermo graphic parameters
1 from observations and model simulation;
• testing sensitivity of modeled temperature, humidity and wind (P1)
against modifications in most important model parameters
• sensitivity study with different PBL + UCM schemes
Impacts of a limited set of important weather events and of spatial
configurations on meteorological fields in the Randstad
Assessing model output requirements for coupling to Urban Strategy
Further model validation and parameterization against observational data;
2 assessing relationships between UHI(max), thermal comfort (heat stress),
& and urban features (P2, →US)
3 Running the model for various weather scenarios, and spatial and
socio-economical scenarios for the urban environment in the Randstad (P3)
4 Providing updates for implementation in Urban Strategy
Completing of PhD thesis and final publications (P4, P5)
3. Model parameterization and validation by observations
CESAR – Project 2: Meteorological Processes
Many new urban canopy schemes on the
market, but:
What is the skill for urban canopy schemes at
street level (micro scale) and mesoscale?
4. Derivation universal relationships for Urban Strategy
Oke (1987):
CESAR – Project 2: Meteorological Processes
WRF too extensive for Urban Strategy:
Once validated, derive universal Modification of urban temperature ∆T
as a function of H/W geometry for
functions/relationships between urban heat several values of ∆ε (ref. ε = 0.80)
and city parameters, incoming radiation,
geo-wind for use in Urban Strategy
ε - emissivity Montavez et al 2008
