2. HISTORY PERSPECTIVE
ο§ Entry of Life Insurance in India in 1818- ORIENTAL Life Insurance was
the first Life Insurance Company to starts its operation in Calcutta.
ο§ 1823-1900 several foreign companies were established.
ο§ Six National Companies appeared in 20th Century.
ο§ Insurance Act, 1938 is the first comprehensive legislation for detailed
and effective control over the activities of insurers.
ο§ On the 19th January 1956 the management of insurers and provident
societies totalling 245, was taken over by the Central Government and
then nationalised on 1.9.1956
ο§ LIC was formed in September 1956 by an Act of Parliament viz. LIC Act,
1956 with capital contribution of Rs. 5 crore from the Government of
India.

3. BIRTH OF INSURANCE REGULATORY DEVELOPMENT
AUTHORITY (IRDA)
In 1993 the Government of Republic of India appointed RN
Malhotra Committee to lay down a road map for privatisation of the
life insurance sector.
While the committee submitted its report in 1994, it took another six
years before the enabling legislation was passed in the year 2000,
legislation amending the Insurance Act of 1938 and legislating the
Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority Act of 2000. The
same year that the newly appointed insurance regulator - Insurance
Regulatory and Development Authority IRDA --started issuing
licenses to private life insurers.
