Description of the activities:
The activities of the meeting started informally at dinner on 22nd September, when all
the participants met at the Italian restaurant “Il Trullo” in Kungalv and got
acquainted.
The official meeting started at 9.00 a.m. on Friday, 23rd September at “Nordiska i
Kungalv” conference centre and it went on until dinner.
The coordinator of the project, teacher Mauro Nicolino, briefly explained the main
aims of the partnership and gave the group some information dealing with the coming
2. activities and with the planned deadlines. The coordinator informed the participants of
the reasons for the absence of the Polish group and she also asked the colleagues to
check the planned timetable and to change it because two of the applicant schools
hadn’t received project approval from their National Agencies.
For this reason the group, comparing the school activities of all the involved countries,
changed the planned mobilities, keeping their number, as follows:
1. Second teachers' meeting in Italy from 18th to 20th November 2011;
2. First students' meeting in Luxembourg from 18th to 21st April 2012;
3. 3rd teachers' meeting in Poland in September 2012 (we'll set the dates for it in
April 2012);
4. 2nd students' meeting in Spain from 18th to 21st October 2012;
5. Final meeting in Italy in April 2013 (we'll set the dates for it in September 2012).
Then the teachers of the different countries were asked to present concisely
themselves, their schools and their national school systems, with particular reference
to the use of CLIL strategies.
After the introductory presentations, a discussion started on the topic of the
partnership: teaching other subjects in English.
The Spanish and the Italian teachers pointed out that in their schools it’s difficult to
find teachers who are really qualified to teach their subjects in English and the
Spanish colleagues stated that in their school there is an increasing number of
immigrants who find it difficult even to learn Spanish, the language in which all the
other subjects are taught in Spain. The question arose: would these people gain from
the CLIL teaching?
Another important matter of discussion was based on the question: what does the
CLIL teaching focus on? Should it improve the communication skills in English or
should it develop the knowledge of the specific contents of the interested school
subjects?
After an animated discussion, the meaning of the word CLIL was highlighted: CLIL
aims at integrating the knowledge and the use of another language (in our case,
English) and the content of a subject. It’s not possible to separate the two things,
since there cannot be true learning without effective communication.
3. The second part of the debate dealt with the possible teaching strategies and we tried
together to answer the question: are there any teaching methods that can help the
teachers to achieve the planned objectives both in the communication skills in English
and in the content of the school subjects?
Some proposals were made by the English teachers, who noted the fundamental
importance of a long term strategy to improve the pupils’ mastery both in English and
in Sciences. The English teachers talked about their successful experiences in L2
teaching using peer tutoring, the discussions, the interactive lessons and new
technologies to create attractive and motivating lessons and learning environments.
After that, we examined together our Science programs and, comparing them, we
chose one didactic unit to be developed by the biology teachers and one unit to be
elaborated by the Physics teachers in the course of this school-year. (See the
enclosed document n. 1).
After the meeting, all the teachers went to visit the host school.
The second day of the meeting was in part used to visit some of the host
organization’s representative places.
We spent the morning in Marstrand, a small island in the county of Västra Götaland,
a place to love for its cultural history, its buildings, its stories and legends. There we
visited the centre of the town, the harbour and Carlstens Fort, a giant grey guard
that has watched over the little wooden city for centuries .
In the afternoon the activities continued in the conference centre; initially we fixed
some important deadlines: the didactic units ought to be finished and evaluated by
14th February 2012.
We have to decide if the Social Sciences can be part of our project by 15th October
2011 and, in this case, we ought to find the teachers and the classes that will take
part in the project, before the meeting in Italy.
After that, we started our debate on the evaluation and we asked ourselves the
following question: what form(s) should the evaluation of the didactic unit take?
After a long and animated discussion, we produced a document (enclosed document
n.2) that will be used by all the teachers to maintain common evaluation criteria both
of the curricular outcomes and of that of the project itself.
We also agreed on the creation of a Twinspace where information and materials can
4. be shared.
The coordinator invited all the participants to join eTwinning as soon as possible.
Outcomes:
1. New schedule of the planned mobilities;
2. Choice of the subjects and of the didactic units;
3. Cross-curricular evaluation document.
4. Final report of the 1st meeting.
