Chuaa51: The History of Internet in the Philippines

  1. 1. The History of Internet in the Philippines Before Facebook, Instagram and Twitter became the trend. Chua, Patricia Maxine A51
  2. 2. A Timeline of Philippine Internet • According to an article by Yahoo! PH, the Internet in the Philippines first opened it’s doors and access on March 29, 1994. • 1986 the Philippines only had a public-access BBS (Bulletin Board System) known as “First-Fil RBBS”. • 1987, a local communication network was made, known as the “The Philippine FidoNet Exchange”
  3. 3. A Timeline of Philippine Internet • 1990, the Ateneo Computer Technology Center, held by Arnie del Rosario, attempted to create a network of communication for universities as well as government purposes. Unfortunately, it failed to be implemented. • 1991-1993, Email was introduced by multinational companies such as Intel, Motorola and Texas Instruments. The direct internet connection that these companies made also encouraged our local firms like ETPI, Philcom and PLDT to operate these advancements commercially in our country. • 1993, “Phase one of the Philnet project shifted into full gear after receiving funding from the DOST.” (Guerrero, 2014)
  4. 4. A Timeline of Philippine Internet • November 1993, addictional funding of P12.5 Million (Guerrero, 2014) was given by DOST to purchase equipments and communication lines that would help kickstart the second project of Philnet. • March 29, 1994, 1:15 am, the Philippines finally had it’s first connection to the internet at the PLDT network center in Makati City. Benjie Tan, ComNet, a company that supplied Cisco routers to the Philnet project was the one who established it. To announce this accomplishment, “he posted a short message to the Usenet newsgroup soc.culture.filipino to alert Filipinos overseas that a link had been made. His message read: • ‘As of March 29,1994 at 1:15 am Philippine time, unfortunately 2 days late due to slight technical difficulties, the Philippines was FINALLY connected to the Internet via SprintLink. The Philippine router, a Cisco 7000 router was attached via the services of PLDT and Sprint communications to SprintLink's router at Stockton Ca. The gateway to the world for the Philippines will be via NASA Ames Research Center. For now, a 64K serial link is the information highway to the rest of the Internet world.’”
  5. 5. A Timeline of Philippine Internet • March 29, 1994, 10:18 a.m.: "We're in" Dr. John Brule, a Professor Emeritus in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Syracuse University, announced at The First International E-Mail Conference at the University of San Carlos in Talamban, Cebu, signifying that Philnet's 64 kbit/s connection was live. (Guerrero, 2014) This was how the internet emerged in the Philippines. From online groups, to attempts to a university communication network, the internet has finally opened our access to all countries and technologies. This is what happened before Facebook, Instagram and Twitter arrived.
