  5. 5. Use  Ingestion of substance/substances without experiencing any negative consequences. Social Recreational Dietary practice Religious ritual Experimental
  6. 6. Abuse  use of any substance  for purposes other than medical and scientific  including use without prescription  in excessive dose levels  or over an unjustified period of time.

Addiction  Repeated use of substance/drugs  User is periodically or chronically intoxicated  Compulsion to take the preferred substance  Great difficulty in voluntarily ceasing or modifying substance use  Obtain substances by almost any means.  Detrimental effect on society and individual  Tendency to increase the dose

  13. 13. Addiction is a complex but treatable disease that affects brain function and behaviour. 1
  14. 14. No Single treatment is appropriate for all individual 2
  15. 15. Treatment needs to be readily available 3
  16. 16. Effective treatment attends to multiple needs of the individual. Not just his or her drug abuse. 4
  17. 17. An individual’s treatment and services plan must be assessed continually and modified as necessary to ensure that it meets his or her hanging needs. 5
  18. 18. Remaining in treatment for adequate period of time is critical for treatment effectiveness 6
  19. 19. Counselling—individual and/or group and other behavioural therapies are the most commonly used forms of drug abuse treatment 7
  20. 20. Medications are an important element of treatment especially when combined with counseling and other behavioral therapies. 8
  21. 21. Many drug-addicted individuals also have other mental disorders. 9
  22. 22. Medically assisted detoxification is only the first stage of addiction treatment it does little to change long-term drug abuse. 10
  23. 23. Treatment does not need to be voluntary to be effective. 11
  24. 24. Drug use during treatment must be monitored continuously, as lapses during treatment do occur. 12
  25. 25. Treatment programs should assess patients for the presence of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis, and other infectious diseases as well as provide targeted risk-reduction counseling. 13

  29. 29. Long Term Residential Treatment  Indoor care 24 hours a day in non hospital setting  Therapeutic community with planned length of stay (6-12 months)  Resocialization of individual  Use the programs entire community – Staff, other residents.
  30. 30. Short-term Residential Treatment  Intensive but relatively brief treatment  3-6 week hospital based inpatient treatment phase f/b  Extended outpatient therapy  Self help group
  31. 31. Out patient Treatment Programs  Varies depending on type and intensity of substance abuse  Cost less than residential or inpatient treatment  More suitable for people with jobs or extensive social support
  32. 32. Individualized Drug Counselling  Focuses on reducing or stopping illicit drug use  Addresses related areas of impaired functioning Employment status Family and social relations Content and structure of patients recovery program
  33. 33. Individualized Drug Counselling  Emphasis given on short term behavioural goals  Helps patient to develop coping strategies  To abstain from drug use and maintain abstinence
  34. 34. Group Counselling  Capitalize on the social reinforcement  Help promote drug free lifestyle
  35. 35. Criminal Justice involved drug abusers  Criminal justice sanctions with drug treatment.  Individuals with legal coercion tend to remain in treatment longer  They do as well as or better than those not under legal pressure.
