Editor's Notes

  1. Ambient intimacy is about being able to keep in touch with people with a level of regularity and intimacy that you wouldn’t usually have access to, because time and space conspire to make it impossible. Flickr lets me see what friends are eating for lunch, how they’ve redecorated their bedroom, their latest haircut. Twitter tells me when they’re hungry, what technology is currently frustrating them, who they’re having drinks with tonight. http://www.disambiguity.com/ambient-intimacy/
  2. December 6 2007, News.Co.Au AS Fairfax Media staff took in the surroundings yesterday at their new offices in inner-Sydney Pyrmont, they had an uneasy feeling they were being watched. The floor-to-ceiling panels, installed overnight, appeared to be more than just artful lines topped with crazy lettering to mark each section of the office. But it was hard to make out the image. Eventually, an artist cracked the code. The giant glass panels featured a photograph of News Corporation chairman and chief executive Rupert Murdoch – Fairfax's arch rival and publisher of The Australian. The discovery was not made until after a grand tour of the new offices – to house The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian Financial Review and The Sun-Herald – by the chairman of the board, Ron Walker, CEO David Kirk and the rest of the board yesterday morning. Staff say there are some 50 panels across three floors and management were last night ripping them down before the glue dried. Some staff members were souveniring the panels. One theory has it that the designer, looking for images of the media, picked one of Mr Murdoch believing him to be the owner of Fairfax Media. The Australian contacted SMH editor Alan Oakley last night, but he did not return calls. However, a Fairfax spokesman, Bruce Wolpe, confirmed the image was, indeed, of Mr Murdoch. "His image is gazing fondly on the newsroom of today, which he has talked about in such rapturous terms and a vote is being taken now as to whether it's the best place for him or whether we should find another location," he said. Mr Wolpe claimed it was not a mistake but the result of a design idea to honour Australian business leaders. "It's a business motif, that's why it went up in the business section," he said. A picture of the late Kerry Packer is also featured on at least one pillar. Last month, the Herald was produced for the first time from the new building. To mark the occasion, the Herald published a cheeky editorial headed "Dear Mr Rupert Murdoch". "We note your remarks in relation to the shape of journalism to come... You are most welcome to come and view what your newspaper, The Australian, called "the newsroom of tomorrow"; it is here today at the Herald."

  6. Death by deletion: Woman Jailed for Murdering Avatar Brennon Slattery Oct 24, 2008 10:59 am The line between virtual reality and its flesh-and-blood cousin blurred a little this week as a 43-year-old Tokyo woman was jailed for murdering her virtual ex-husband's avatar. After she suddenly found herself divorced in "Maple Story," a popular 2-D side scrolling MMORPG, the unidentified woman used her ex-husband's ID and password to log into the game and kill him off. Call it Death by Deletion.
  7. http://www.crn.com/networking/207800673 Cyber Bullying Mom Charged in MySpace Suicide Case By Michele Masterson, ChannelWeb 3:38 PM EDT vr. mei. 16, 2008 Federal prosecutors have filed an indictment in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in Los Angeles against Lori Drew, who is accused of using a fake MySpace account to send bullying messages to a teen who later committed suicide. The O'Fallon, Mo. mother, was charged with one count of conspiracy and three counts of computer crimes. In addition to Drew, her daughter and another teen that were reportedly involved in the harassment; all have denied their involvement. Drew allegedly created the MySpace account pretending to be a 16-year-old boy using the alias "Josh Evans" and sent messages to 13-year-old Megan Meier, an acquaintance of her daughter. Starting in September 2006, the messages were friendly and expressed romantic interest in Meier, but by the next month, "Evans" sent Meir a final message saying, "The world would be a better place without you." Consequently, a distraught Meier hung herself.
  8. http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/01/americas-army-t.html In order to assume the role of combat medic in the America's Army game, players must go through virtual medical training classes based on the actual training that real soldiers receive. The creators of America's Army developed the training scenarios with young adults in mind, recognizing their need to be able to respond in emergency situations. Through the game, players learn to evaluate and prioritize casualties, control bleeding, recognize and treat shock, and administer aid when victims are not breathing. On Nov. 23, 2007, Galvanek was driving West-bound on I-40 in North Carolina with his family. About 25 miles south of Raleigh he witnessed an SUV on the east-bound lanes lose control of the vehicle and flip about five times. While his wife called 911, he stopped his vehicle and ran across the highway to the scene of the accident. Assuming the role of first responder, he quickly assessed the situation and found two victims in the smoking vehicle. Needing to extract them quickly, he helped the passenger out of the truck and noticed he had minor cuts and injuries. He told the man to stay clear of the smoking car and quickly went to the driver's side where he located a wounded man. He pulled the driver to safety on the side of the road. Galvanek immediately noticed the man had lost two fingers in the accident and was bleeding profusely. The victim had also suffered head trauma. Galvanek located a towel, put pressure on the man’s hand, and instructed him to sit down and elevate his hand above his head while pressing the towel against his lost fingers. Galvanek then attended to his head cut and determined that injury was not as serious as his hand. Roughly five minutes later, an Army soldier in plain clothing arrived on the scene of the accident and informed Galvanek that he was medically trained and could take over until the paramedics arrived. He looked over the injured men and told Galvanek that he had done a great job. Once the soldier assured Galvanek that the two men were in stable condition and there was nothing more he could do to assist until the paramedics arrived, Galvanek left the scene and continued on his journey. Since America's Army launched on July 4, 2002, users have invested over 211 million hours virtually exploring the Army from Basic Training to operations in the War on Terrorism. America's Army ranks among the Top 10 online PC action games played worldwide. The game provides a unique, interactive experience allowing players to gain a perspective into Army occupations and values by assuming virtual roles as U.S. Army Soldiers. Players navigate through challenges real Soldiers confront. As they dominate these challenges, they expand opportunities for advancement and development in roles from Special Forces to combat medic.

  11. Glass consumer: We are all 'glass consumers'. Organisations know so much about us, they can almost see through us. Governments and businesses collect and process our personal information on a massive scale. Everything we do, and everywhere we go, leaves a trail. But is this in our interests? The glass consumer appraises this relentless scrutiny of consumers' lives. It reviews what is known about how personal information is used and examines the benefits and risks to consumers. The book takes the debate beyond privacy issues, arguing that we are living in a world in which - more than ever before - our personal information defines our opportunities in life.

  13. Ambient Intimacy http://www.disambiguity.com/ambient-intimacy/ Ambient intimacy is about being able to keep in touch with people with a level of regularity and intimacy that you wouldn’t usually have access to, because time and space conspire to make it impossible. Flickr lets me see what friends are eating for lunch, how they’ve redecorated their bedroom, their latest haircut. Twitter tells me when they’re hungry, what technology is currently frustrating them, who they’re having drinks with tonight. Who cares? Who wants this level of detail? Isn’t this all just annoying noise? There are certainly many people who think this, but they tend to be not so noisy themselves. It seems to me that there are lots of people for who being social is very much a ‘real life’ activity and technology is about getting stuff done. There are a lot of us, though, who find great value in this ongoing noise. It helps us get to know people who would otherwise be just acquaintances. It makes us feel closer to people we care for but in whose lives we’re not able to participate as closely as we’d like. Knowing these details creates intimacy. (It also saves a lot of time when you finally do get to catchup with these people in real life!) It’s not so much about meaning, it’s just about being in touch.

  15. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One,_No_one_and_One_Hundred_Thousand date of publication: 1924 (1909); awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1934 Vitangelo discovers by way of a completely irrelevant question that his wife poses to him that everyone he knows, everyone he has ever met, has constructed a Vitangelo persona in their own imagination and that none of these personas corresponds to the image of Vitangelo that he himself has constructed and believes himself to be. How can one come to know the true foundation, the substate of the self? Vitangelo seeks to catch it by surprise as its shows itself in a brief flash on the surface of consciousness. But this attempt at revealing the secret self, chasing after it as if it were an enemy that must be forced to surrender, does not give the desired results. Just as soon as it appears, the unknown self evaporates and recomposes itself into the familiar attitudes of the superficial self. Once cured of his illness, Vitangelo has a completely new perspective, completely "foreign". He no longer desires anything and seeks to follow moment by moment the evolution of life in him and the thing that surround him. He no longer has any history or past, he is no longer in himself but in everything around and outside of him.
