Definition :
MEDIA : PLURAL FOR MEDIUM An intervening substance through which something else is transmitted or carried on.
Why study the Media?
The media are ubiquitous They make claims upon our attention our precious time our memory our purses Almost everyone can and does produce media: blogs, facebook status updates, emails, text messages
everyone?
Everyone can and might produce/distribute media but not everyone has the same kind of power
What is media power? Who has power? Owners? Advertisers? Audiences? Producers? Engineers? Nations? Languages? Cultures?
media AUDIENCE
CHOICE Remote control Facebook friends interpretations How free are we in our choices?
Remote control We can choose a channel but not what’s on it We can surf the range of channels available but we can’t change the bouquet We can choose our products but not what use is made of the profits
Facebook friends We can choose who to add and who to reject but we can’t choose who is on facebook or who owns facebook or who our friends’ friends are
interpretations We can choose how we interpret a media product but we cannot choose the cultural and cognitive and intellectuals frameworks that limit and color our readings.
Why do we study the media? because the media are everywhere we have two choices we can ignore it or we can understand it. we study the media to know more about ourselves- we study literature for the same reason studying media helps us communicate more effectively and use media more critically studying media might help us make a better guess about future trends
By the way, did we decide what the media are? mediators transformers constructers how is breaking news mediated, transformed, constructed?
So why do we study the media? - We spend 15 years of our waking lives watching TV - 1/3rd of our lives immersed in media Introducting Media Studies Ziauddin Sardar and Borin Van Loon
