This document provides information about the Common Core State Standards and new World Language Essential Standards for North Carolina. It discusses how the standards are designed to prepare students for college and careers in an increasingly global economy. A timeline is presented for the transition from the current NCSCOS to the new Essential Standards, which will be taught and assessed starting in the 2010-2011 school year. Teachers are encouraged to explore ways to incorporate specific elements of the new standards into their fall classes and to document their experiences for sharing at the next professional development session.

5. What to Incorporate… Essential Questions Learning Targets Essential Questions for your class should be open-ended. Why How EQs highlight the usefulness, the relevance, and the greater benefit of a unit. Often the “so what?” about the material covered. Is should be answerable to an extent by the end of the unit, but also have more than one possible answer. Learning Targets for your class/lesson should be specific to what you want the students to be able to do. aka: objectives LTs are statements of intended learning based on the standards. Formative Assessment FA is a process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to help students improve their achievement of intended instructional outcomes. FA is found at the classroom level and happens minute to minute or in short cycles. FA is not grades or used in accountability systems. The feedback involved in formative assessment is descriptive in nature so that students know what they need to do next to improve learning.
