2. Front Cover
Masthead:
the title of the magazine is one of the
only things on the page that is in
colour which makes it stand out from
everything else on the cover. The
text is in capital letters which makes
it look important. The fact that it is
at the very top just underneath the
header means that it will be seen on
the shelf even if there is another
magazine covering it from the shelf
underneath. The font has a ‘smashed’
effect giving the impression that the
magazine is not ‘easy going’ or ‘light-
hearted’ and that the features in the
magazine will not be from any other
genre of music other than heavy
genres like rock.
Header:
The header would also be able
to be seen if the magazine is
covered on the shelf. The
header says ‘NIRVANA’ which
will draw fans of nirvana and
rock in general towards buying
the magazine. This is also
written in yellow which stands
out from everything else in
black and white.
Barcode/date:
This is very small in the
corner of the page which
draws attention away
from the price and puts it
more on the artists
features on the front.
Pull quote:
“I’m not like them but I can
pretend the sun is gone
but I have a light the day is
done but I’m having fun…”
are lyrics from a song by
Nirvana. This would entice
their fans as they would
automatically recognise
the lyrics and then be
interested in buying the
magazine. It Is also written
in yellow which stands out
off the black and white
picture underneath.
The cover of this issue is very
simplistic which makes it almost
look like a special edition. There
is minimal writing which just
advertises the main feature of
the magazine (Nirvana).
3. Main Image
The main image covers the whole of
the page and even covers part of the
mast head. This shows the
importance of the band shown in the
image and how they are very
significant in this issue of ‘Kerrang’.
There is nothing else really on the
cover other than lyrics from a
‘Nirvana’ song. This shows how the
whole magazine is dedicated to
‘Nirvana’. The image is in black and
white which makes it seem slightly
old. This could suggest that the band
has been going for many years
making them very famous with a
huge fan base that will buy the
magazine. Because the image is so
big people will not be able to help
them selves noticing it on the shelf.
4. Contents Page Title:
The font of the title
and the background
to the title look
almost handwritten
making it look edgy
and fits in with the
genre.
Structure:
The structure of the page allows
the readers to easily find what
page they are looking for quickly.
there are subheadings that
categorise different aspects of the
magazine. This allows the reader
to look-up what they need to
without having to scan through
the whole of the contents page.
The main articles are supported
by images too and the page
numbers for these sections are
made bigger so they stand out.
Other headlines are made smaller
suggesting that they are not as
important as the other articles.
When in a shop thinking of buying
the magazine the consumer can
quickly look at the main articles
and decide whether to buy it or
not.
Editorial:
There are editorials explaining
what is featured in the magazine
and also a small section written by
the editor of the magazine. This
makes it seem personal for the
readers.
5. Double Page Spread
Main image:
The main image shows one of the
singers from the band performing
at one of their concerts. This
allows the fans that buy the
magazine to reminisce concerts
that they may have been to in the
past.
Secondary image:
The image is in black and white showing
it is from years ago. This shows how old
the band is and how dedicated the fans
are to still be interested in the band after
years.
Structure:
The article is arranged in columns with certain
sections being emphasised by being put in a
bigger font and in capital letters. Another section
has been separated by putting a red background
behind the writing. This could suggest that it is a
very important part of the article and fans will be
interested by it.
Fonts:
The fonts vary throughout the double page.
The word ‘ANGELS’ is written in the typical
Nirvana font so that the audience/fans can
relate to it. ‘and demons’ is written in a
different font so it contrasts with the rest of
the age, it does not match. The ‘nirvana’
logo is in the top right corner of the page
which is another thing the audience can
relate to. It is in the same font as it is on the
album covers and merchandise. This will
attract fans of Nirvana.
6. Audience
• Kerrang will have a very wide target audience as
it covers many different aspects of the rock
genre.
• The pop/punk aspect to the magazine will attract
younger generations and teenagers where as
bands that feature on the front such as ‘ACDC’
and ‘NIRVANA’ will attract older people,
especially males.
• Heavy rock is the main feature of the magazine
which would attract older people, also mainly
males.
