ICT for Teacher Supervision
& Professional Development
2. Introduction
1. Development of ICT and the possibilities for
CPD: Some new useful notions.
2. More roles for teachers, new roles for
supervisors.
3. Examples and practical experiences.
4. Challenges on CPD
5. Positive impact of ICT
Conclusion.
3. Introduction
Educational reform: Teacher CPD is key to
quality.
Context: Supervisors are getting fewer. Too
many teachers to supervise. More time for
administrative and evaluative tasks. Less time is
left for continuing professional development
(CPD). Limited quality CPD.
Hypothesis: ICT can help supervisors in
planning, managing and delivering quality CPD.
Key question: How can ICT help in CPD? Are
there any practical experiences to learn from in
our immediate context?
4. 1. Development of ICT and possibilities
for CPD: Some new useful notions
1.1. Content management and delivery: Cloud
computing (google drive) and curation (scoop.it).
1.2. Flipped training (Flipped CPD).
1.3. Social media for communication and
collaboration: facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter;
Google+; online professional groups (facebook,
www.academia.edu, linkedin, google+,
yahoogroups)
1.4. Online courses and CPD: Online courses
(MOOCs, Coursera), Webinars, LMS (Learning
management systems), online professional
newsletters and websites (curriki, edutopia)
5. 1. Development of ICT and possibilities for
CPD: Some new useful notions (Cont’d)
1.5. Sharing, documenting and reflecting:
Website, e-portfolio (weebly, wix, googlesite),
blogging (Journal writing), video channel
(vimeo, youtube), slideshare…
1.6. Global project work: iEARN, Schools Online,
MyHero…
1.7. Materials and content development: tablet
PCs, mobile/smart phones, wireless internet
connection have led to: BOYD (Bring Your Own
Devices), M-technology, M-learning.
6. 2. More roles for teachers,
new roles for supervisors
2.1. The current situation/context of supervision
calls for a new perspective of supervision (new
approaches, new solutions).
Teacher: responsible for one’s own CPD (shared
responsibility, mutual accountability, shifted
leadership), action planner, collaborator, active
contributor
Supervisor: facilitator, guide, project manager
ICT tools support these new roles, perspectives
and framework.
7. 3. Examples and practical solutions
Developing individual and collective action plans.
Working through project work.
Building Teacher Professional Portfolios and E-
portfolios.
Establishing Teacher Learning Communities
(TLCs): online collaboration and communication.
Focus groups.

8. 4. Challenges
Change: Mind shift and attitude change (from
individualized to collaborative work, from
receptive/passive to productive/active position)
Technical problems, technical training
Preparation (project work, online platforms)
9. 5. Positive impact of ICT on CPD
5.1. Connectivity
5.2. Sociability
5.3. Interactivity
5.4. Mobility,
5.5. Transferability,
5.6. Immediacy and automaticity
5.7. Universality and globalism.
10. "… when teachers are given the time and tools to
collaborate they become life-long learners, their
instructional practice improves, and they are
ultimately able to increase student achievement
far beyond what any of them could accomplish
alone.“
(Thomas G. Carroll et al (Editors), June 2010.
