  1. 1. Wuhan is the capital of Hubei Province in the People's Republic of China. It is the largest city in Hubei and the most populous city in Central China, with a population of over 11 million. The name "Wuhan" came from the city's historical origin from the conglomeration of Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang, which are collectively known as the "Three Towns of Wuhan". It lies in the eastern Jianghan Plain, at the confluence of the Yangtze river and its largest tributary, the Han River and is known as "Nine Provinces' Thoroughfare"

  4. 4. Hubei Provincial Library was established in 1904 as Bureau of Books at Wudang Palace by Zhang Zhidong, the viceroy of Huguang. The New library has a construction area of about 100,000 square meters, the reading rooms can hold 6300 people at the same time. The library has a collection of more than 5,500,000 volumes at present

  8. 8. Wuhan University is regarded as one of the top ten universities in China, and its history dates back to 1893, making it one of China’s oldest institutions of higher learning.

  12. 12. Situated at the convergence of the Yangtze River and the Han River is the rain making Dragon King Temple
  13. 13. According to information presented in an anthology of ancient poetry published during the Qing Dynasty, local people built the Dragon King Temple by the river to worship the dragon king in the fourth year of Qianlong Emperor's reign (1739).
  14. 14. In Chinese mythology, the dragon king is the ruler of the rivers and seas. Inside the temple are interesting structures like Dragon King Pavilion, Rain Prayer Terrace, and additional halls
  15. 15. As a place which commemorates Wuhan's many battles against flooding, Dragon King Temple is now a famous scenic spot where visitors can admire the natural beauty of Wuhan's two great rivers, as well as learn more about the city's history and culture
  16. 16. Red represents fire and is the most popular color in China. It is also the national color representing happiness, beauty, vitality, good luck, success and good fortune. Red is famously popular in relation to anything Chinese and is widely used during festivals and important events like weddings
  17. 17. Heptachord Terrace (Guqin Tai) is a tranquil recreational site that commemorates Bo Ya, a musician that specialised in the guqin (a plucked seven-string Chinese instrument), during the Spring and Autumn Periods
  18. 18. Legends suggests the site is where Bo met his confident Zhong Ziqi – both were from Hubei. A year after their encounter, Bo learnt that Zhong had passed away. The tragic news broke Bo’s heart because he felt that nobody could understand his music anymoreHeptachord Terrace (Guqin Tai)
  19. 19. Yu Boya then broke his guqin and decided to never play it again. The famed relationship between Bo and Zhong is associated with a common idiomatic Chinese expression zhiyin, which connotes friendship while literally meaning “understanding the music”.
  20. 20. Bo Ya's story exemplifies the Chinese ideal of friendship. The term Zhiyin (知音,literally "to know the tone") has come to describe a close and sympathetic friend
  21. 21. The Legend of Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi, a household story spread in the ancient State of Chu (now mainly referred to central China’s Hubei province), was listed in the fourth batch of Chinese National Intangible Cultural Heritage, according to the local media on August 7, 2014
